Mk1 LWB Ex-Feuerwehr Camper Conversion

Postby Luke » Wed Oct 15, 2008 10:31 pm

Better start a progress thread on this one too

fetched this from germany last week :D 8000 miles from new 38 years old and practically no rust 8) link to thread on fetching it :D

Image

my plan is to make a 3 berth camper with modern interion but keeping the retro exterior 8)

the camper part will hopefully have 3 beds 5 seats at the table, gas hob & grill, heater, fridge, toilet, shower, 2 sinks, storage space, 240/12v electrics. all the usual camper stuff  ive done a rough design and it doesn't involve cutting any extra windows in (just incase i ever wanted to return it to a van in years to come) :D

other mods will be, convert to rhd, fit modern engine (unsure what yet) to replace the 1.7V4, change to disk brakes (currently non servo drums all round), convert to 5 speed gearbox, change back axle to lower ratio cruising speed one.

so far ive been working towards getting it regestered as a UK van, once its MOT'd and insured i can get a UK reg :D

Ive also started to remove all the framework that held the fire kit and the rear wooden seats, ive also took out the half bulkhead, theres still a fair bit to do and before i fit any of the camper bits. and of course to preserve the condition i'll be fully waxoiling and undersealing it :D

i'll update this thread as i progress :D

 when ive got it with 2 steering wheels my 3ry old daughter can pretend shes driving - might get some funny looks in queueing traffic

1st problem - the early vans must have a different shaped bulkhead as the peadl box (now shotblasted and hammerited) wont fit up tight to the bulkhead :x my 67 pickup has a pedal box conversion so i'll have to pop up and look how thats been done :D

Image

other than that all the fire kit is out of the back and it's now MOT'd, DVLA are sending me some forums to fill in then i can have a UK reg 8)

ended up going to the DVLA office for the regestration :D - all done fee paid (£55) and i'm just waiting for my reg to be sent out 8) i think it'll be a H reg :)

slighty changing the plan for the interior - i was origanally having a double seat in the back but changed it to a single with a flip up edge - although this isnt finished it needs to extend out another 8"

this is what ive built so far - the saet base frame :D

ignore the hammer its not finshed yet

this will also be a double bed (although only 3'7" wide) and thats where the head will be :D
