Mk6 Variable Intermittent wipe!

Postby 100 T280 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 10:01 pm

Been wondering if this is possible for some time, as the fixed-interval intermittent wipe on the mk6 is a bit crap really.
Got hold of a mk2 Mondeo wiper stalk some time ago, mainly for when I acquire some glazed rear doors, this has the little wheel with 1 to 6 on it, to vary the wipe interval timing. However, the wiring on the Mondeo is different, these use a module rather than the old type red delay relay.
So after re-discovering this part in the garage today, I decided to have a little fiddle about, and the result is, it's not only possible, but very easy too.
This is the first addition (bodge?) to the wiring of my mk6 so far. It only needs one wire, running from the only spare pin (no.1) on the wiper stalk to the fusebox (CJB).

Stalk multiplug with new wire in place...
Image

I stripped an old piece of FWD engine comp. loom down to get a good length of red/white wire of the correct gauge, with a suitable pin connector to fit the stalk multiplug. Routed it roughly for the time, will need taping into the main loom at some point to disguise the fact it's a bodge-up, but this will require the dash out. :( Next I crimped a spade terminal to the other end, and inserted this into the spare (empty) connection in the CJB for the delay relay. The standard Transit relay is the 4 pin type, which needs changing for the 5 pin type, from, i.e a Mk2 / 3 Granada.

New stalk fitted 8)

Delay can now be altered to any of the six settings on the stalk, ranging from approx. 3.5 seconds on position 1, 6 seconds on position 2, up to 24 seconds on no.6.
I think setting 1 should be giving a shorter delay than 3.5 seconds, as this seems pretty close to the standard interval of around 5 or 6 seconds, but without modifying the relay (if it's possible) there's not a lot that can be done about that, except to play about with a Mondeo wiper control module.

PS does the mk6 have a separate washer reservoir / pump for the rear door(s) anyone :?:

8) you got far to much time on your hands

Always made me wonder why they didnt come with intermittent as standard/optional extra :?:

IIRC the rear washers are done by a twin outlet pump from the original bottle instead of the single :!:

Nice work as normal 8) 8)

Excellent..!!! Might do this, but has anyone changed or thought of changing the Main/dip stalk, from the type the Mk6 has ( pull back click type ) to the forward for main, back for dip type like in my old Mk5, not a fan of the new stalk, my only gripe going from the Mk5 to Mk6, 8-)

Not sure it should be red... looking at the wiring standard colour codes, I think the main colour ought to be orange, with white tracer, but didn't have one that colour, and it's not readily detectable as a bodge. On the Mondeo, this wire is white... :?

Just to verify you need a Mk3 Mondeo wiper stalk if anyone is doing this, 8-)

Will this work with the multi-position Scorpio (NOT GRANADA  ) switch ?. I have several !
I also have a Scorpio column mounted radio remote I would like connected too, but I ain't so good with electrix (in fact I'm f***ing useless with them).

If the Scorpio ('85> )wiper switch looks the same, then it probably is and will fit / work.
Does the radio control stalk have its own wiring loom, i.e separate from the main wiring? The 7000 (and I think 6000 also) has the socket for this between the two black plugs on the back.

Have you got any spare.... :P

Hi 100T280

I don't know what a Mondeo wiper stalk looks like ,here is a Scorpio one.

Image

Yes the radio remote does have its own little loom & box,

Image

I have a 6006e in the van & there is provision for the yellow plug from the remote.

When I removed it I had two wires I had to cut & two I don't know where they go

Image

The blue with orange tracer & black went off to the radio,(left side in pic) the other blue with orange tracer & white with green tracer went off behind a monster loom behind the speedo.

When you ask do I have another, I guess you mean radio remote ? Yes, but with no wiring at all.

Image

(I have an 'almost' complete '97 Scorpio estate as my spares supply for my 98 Scorpio Estate)
Thanks
Terry
