Camper Conversion using recyled materials.

Postby dirtydiesel » Thu Oct 14, 2010 7:33 pm

Hello all.
I bought an automatic 1996 lwb hr turbo diesel transit in January 2010. I'm in Ireland, the van was for sale in dingle Co.Kerry for 100euro. It was on UK plates(p) and had been parked up for 2 years. The guy who owned it moved here from the UK and used it to move his stuff over, then parked it up.
Drove the 80 miles to dingle with a friend, brought 2 batteries, drum of diesel, sledge hammer and oil. we fitted the batteries and topped up the oil and water and threw in a drum of diesel, turned the key and it started straight away! GO ON THE TRANSIT.
Few taps of the sledge and all the brakes were free.
The guy had receipts for various work done to the van including a recon box. Paid him and we were off on our merry way on some bad coast roads, plenty of steep hills and sharp bends, gearbox was a bit slow to change down so ended up doing it manually. got to within 30 miles of home when she cut out, stopped dead on a bend on a bad road, oh shite, Turned key and she started and ran enough to get her off the road, popped the bonnet to have a look, and the lovely dry engine I saw in Kerry was covered in oil, Took a me sort of while to find the problem, it was a crack in the oil filter, left the van and went to get one, but to no avail, a local garage gave us a drum of waste oil and sort of paste(cant think what it was called) patched the filter and filled her with waste oil(had no cash to buy new oil). Said a prayer as I turned the key, oh yes she started.
Off we go paranoia setting in now so I'm stopping every few miles, loads of oil dripping off engine but the filter holds up.
Get home park her in the driveway and switch her off, feeling relieved to get her home.Grabbed some old carpet and put it under her to soak up the oil dripping off underneath.
After tea and sandwiches went to start her only to hear a loud click, try again click and again click, its in park, has loads of oil, and 2 good batteries, still it just clicks, I'm sickened as its gotta be seized, thinking why did I put waste oil in it.
Went to the pub to drown the sorrows, very hung over on Sunday morning I turn the key and she starts, oh yes I'm a happy man.
Bought new oil and a filter on Monday and ordered brake pads and other bits, done all that and she has been running sweet ever since.
Used her to deliver bouncy castles all summer and decided to turn her into a camper this month.
Got some seating and bits and bobs from a scrapped mobile home(all for free) gathered up scrap bits of timber from building sites.

You could try here for Rustoleum. It's called combicolour by made by rustoleum.

http://www.paintshop.ie/Steel-Protection/CombiColor---primer-and-topcoat.aspx

There's even a link to the VW lads who did their van in rustoleum.

Sound for that link, I can get it from them, it was going to cost more for postage than the paint to get it from the uk.
