mK 5 smiley, putting the smile back

Postby blue.van.man » Tue Oct 26, 2010 10:10 pm

I bought my 1999 Mk 5 Smiley tranny two years ago, its an ex British Gas van and was in very good condition for its age and with full history. It had got some rust on the arches and back doors but I would of been very suspicious if it hadn't. It also had a dent in the passenger door and side door but was solid and the 2.5di sounded sweet. Anyway here she is just as I bought her

After deciding to tidy the bodywork up this year, before I knew it it was September and the summer was disappearing fast. I got a few days off work and got cracking asap before I lost the weather. I bought a new repair panel for the LH back door but got a peice of angled steel for the right one, ( Reapir panels £16 a door, angled steel £3, easy descision  ). I cut out the rot with an angle grinder and treated any surface rust with Hammerite Kurust, I've used this before and highly reccomend it. Welded in new sections and prepped ready for paint.

The body wasn't bad so the back arches just wanted sanding down, yes they are the original ones and dont have holes in, AMAZING !

The passenger side front arch wasn't as good as the drivers side so I've put on a new lower wing repair panel and a new lower arch section, chopping out the rot first :D
The door had a crease down the middle and the side door had a couple of dents on the top half so I knocked and filled them. Now its definately got the RAT look

After 4 days of prep it was a nice sunny day and perfect weather conditions for a top quality, outside respray, low bake ( the sun was out )

Ok its not a £500 respray and the neighbours might not speak for a few days but I think you'll agree its lookin' good 8)

I've since sprayed the mirror backs blue and the grill so I'll get some more pics this weekend ( weather permitting ) and let you have a look at her.

Thanks for all the good comments, got some latest pics today despite the weather, just a few more finishing touches to do now. I reckon the grill looks better in blue than it did in the british gas grey, and the blue mirror backs look cool. I've put a chrome number plate surround on at the back and a neat little ST badge. The colour by the way, as a few of you have mentioned it, is British Gas Dark Blue all I can say is well done British Gas, you've got taste, I've got the paint code if anyone wanted it.
