Rob Cee's transit - start of makeover

Postby robbie.cee » Mon Jan 17, 2011 7:09 pm

hi all i'm gonna start to insulate the rear of the van so we can go camping etc and stay bit warmer. also need it to be a working van so i cant fit it out with permanent fittings.
I have done a few mods so far to outside (led's and clear front indicators) also rear led's too. gotta wait til spring to re do the rust and recolour her too.
gonna use this time(whilst quitting smoking) to keep myself busy and do my beloved van. went to b and q got 3 rolls if insulation for £3. got 3 packs and some polystyrene for the roof. i know its not perfect but only needs last a few years.
got a roof lining from madbri, and will go carpet shop to get some cheap office type carpet to line walls and floor and storage box- seats.

also got 2 spinny round roof vents to fit but i'm not cutting the roof just yet...

will upload some pix tomo :D

ok so first day with no ciggies so early start for me today. half ten and outside enjoying some sunshine!!
firstly, crap out of van
Image
then set to removing the ply from the side with the sliding door
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

then i set about creating some cubby holes like AlanN did. bloody good idea that!
Image
Image

after i cut the ply i refitted it and screwed bottom in place
then i started to split the insulation into layers
Image
Image

now its time to get stuffing... wear gloves to stop itching(although this stuff was ok!)
Image
Image
Image

now thats done, tuck in any excess. im gonna use thin polystyrene to line the cubbyholes then carpet over the top to hide the poly.and carpet the edges. i did jam a layer of the fiberglass stuff in the bottom of the cubbys.

the only rust i saw on the inside was the sliding door runners nuts
Image
so i used some of this stuff on them to oxidize them properly so they cant rust anymore.
Image

with that done, cant progress on cubbys til i get polystyrene and carpet, so i moved on to left rear door.
as before i removed the ply, give a lil clean up but mainly 11yrs of dust as the van was lined once brought by Telewest. touch!
i removed the wiring for the handwash as its no longer there and ill use the feed for some rear spotlights in future.
Image
Image
Image
Image
get your hands right in or use something to poke as much insulation as you can into all the nooks and crannies but beware sharp edges!!! i used one roll of stuff in the wall and left rear door, but really just get in as much as you can. its not gonna be perfect but it WILL make huge difference in temperature in cold and heat.
now the left door is reskinned, sip of coff....er no its empty!
Image

quick break to fill kettle and do brew then start on rear right door.....

ok so cup refilled and now for right rear door. again, ply off , clean then get stuffing!! i tried to leave decent bit of clearance from the lock and pushbars that connect handles to lock for obvious reasons!
Image
Image
Image
Image

pack it in nice and then ply back on door and start on the b*stard wall- the big one where even with all screws removed, the ply wont come out.
not to be out done by a tree, and too lazy to dig xtn lead from shed, i held a wood saw to the ply, started rubbing til the blade went through the wood. then i could cut the cubbys out.
Image
Image

once final cubby cut, screwed lower side of ply in few more places, then started to stuff with insulation. mostly finished but will get some more done on my next day off, but thats all folks! til next fri or sat!

cheers to Barry (the Cap'n) for your advise, and always good to have a chat with like minded people! :D

Hi there Rob Cee like what you`re doing, need to do mine but has a plastic waterproof? liner inside,so need to have a look behind that to see if there is any insulation. My concern is that if you get any condensation on the inside of the panels the wool will sweat and water will need to run somewhere and cause rust!Think a baco foil type memrane on panels might stop this but not sure. What does any one else think. My van is ex clear channel owned and i wonder if any one else has investigated what`s behind the plastic lining.

heat rising, will be roof that gets it the most i reckon. plastic barrier good idea tho i might do it anyways. only case of gettin ply off. well one wall will be easy!

still not finished big wall, and need more ply to do rest of doors where windows are usually. also not packed sliding door yet either! :P

right today after helping my neighbour wire up some lights in the back of his new recovery van i finished off the last roll of fiberglass on the big 'bastid' wall in Franny. then i measured up the sizes of visible roof panels not including cross spars. got some poly board the other day so i set about gettin cuttin.

Home Made Foot Operated Electric Hot Knife.
one day in physics lesson about 15 years ago, we was learning about basically Ohm's Law by recording current drawn thru constantan at different voltages and recording the temperatures i think! basically this wire got really hot without glowing red hot and melting.... i knew, even back then, one day i might need some so i acquired a roll! its called Constantan im sure. wicked stuff, strong and stupidly high electrical resistance! think could make heating elements from it???
Image

anyways, got a spare car battery, some wire, a bit of metal from an old ceiling light and said wire.
Image
i connected the wire to the + on the battery using the red protective cap to hold in place.
Image
The handles were useful to hold - wire just above the terminal so i could press wire onto terminal with my boot. foot operated!
Image
the other business end of the + i connected to 2 foot metal rod, constantan wrapped many many times round t'other end of the rod same as battery feed. i had approx 1 meter of constantan which i then connected to - wire. i could have improved on this by using 2 rods or better still like on scrapheap challenge some guy made a wooden L about 2 foot each arm.

Polystyrene board marked for cut i started to hot knife the line as best i could...
Image
the hot knife effect gives decent edge and seals/quarterizes the cut. dont get those fekin balls everywhere !!!!
Image
still its only as good as your hands are steady! lol
Image

board cut, took out to van, slotted up in roof and then broke the fekin corner off cos i was a bit heavy handed and was slightly too long! DUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRR. still, wont see it when its finishhed so i wasnt too pissed off.

by this time it was gettin cold and dark so i called it a day..... stay tuned folks ! :D
