Ive managed to source a brand new overdrive gearbox with the laycock overdrive on the back for my mk1 transit so im in the process of fitting it.
It all fits fine my original 4 speed propshaft fits original clutch can still be used along with original bellhousing and the clutch cable and speedo drive all fit as well ive been very lucky so far.
Ive had to remove the original gearbox mount from the floor as the 4 speed box used the hang from the floor type mount and the overdrive box uses a 5 speed type 9 mk3 transit gearbox crossmember which bolted straight up to my chassis as the captive threads were all there. The only other thing i will have to do is modify my down pipes to clear the crossmember as they line right up with it so im going to make my own custom downpipes and my mate is letting me use his pipe bender so no problems with that bit either.
The only problem im up against is getting hold of a clutch to fit my camper:
I need a new clutch kit for my 1974 mk1 transit campervan i brought a brand new old stock transit mk1 v4 clutch kit from ebay and it all is the same (release bearing and friction plate) apart from the pressure plate which is slightly smaller around the outside edge (not the bit the clutch plate sits on thats the same diameter) and the dowls/bolt spacing is different and the holes dont line up with my flywheel it is a very small difference but its enough to stop me fitting it. Mine is definitely the smaller size clutch 8 1/2" or 215mm.
The local parts shop my dad uses as his in the motor trade have even ordered in a corsair v4 clutch kit and a pinto clutch kit and they both have the same difference on the pressure plate.
No one seems to be able to tell me what clutch kit I need and mine is a UK built 1974 registered late 1973 build date 1.7 v4 enginged canterbury mk1 transit short wheel base transit 90 campervan.
I was just hoping that someone on here might have come up against this problem and knows what clutch i need as im very confused by it now. I know fords were on stike around that time so maybe they fitted a different flywheel/clutch set up i really dont know? ?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
I will post up some pictures of the conversion as i go along
