Leaking Mk1 Pinion seal

Postby nostromo » Sat Apr 27, 2013 2:13 am

Hello, my diff is leaking a fair bit (as in like a pool from just resting up on our sloped driveway for a week). I've seen a few videos where people replace pinion seals in situ without removing the diff, anyone done this? Is a new crush tube needed? I have seen where people suggest marking the nut position before removing, then cranking the nut back up to the same number of turns when putting back on.
Also my Transit is a SWB camper with single wheels, the rear axle is the type where the diff comes out from the front, and the diff is a circle shape..is this a 'Type 34' axle?
Thanks.

:)
If it were my problem: -

1) I'd park facing up hill in future, so the oil levelled off the other way.

2) Add some Wynn's Stop Leak to the axle oil
. . . . .http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wynns-manual- ... 1c311da130
. . . . . A bit of insurace for the hub seals. :x

3) Top up the axle.

4a) As I'm a paid up member of KISS, I'd change the oil seal with the diff in the axle.

4b) If I had any sense, I'd change the diff seal "on the bench"
. . . . change the hub seals at the same time.
. . . . . . . . . thus saving myself a small fortune replacing linings and wheel cylinder seals ruined next week by oil sleaks.

But as they say, you can't put a wise head on young shoulders.

Red arrows for my wifes benefit
Those filler plugs are a weird size, somewhere in between 3/8 and 1/2 drive :| A 3/8 with some welding wire jammed in to fill up the slop allowed me to get it undone. Actually, should the oil level be right up to the filler plug? Because when I checked it was chocca full up to there already and ran out (which is where all the oil around the filler plug came from).

If it were me: -
I'd get my motor level
take the filler plug out
less what will drain out - drain out.
Then I stick my fionger in the diff
and let a finger more oil out.
.

I'd also change thhe bolts through the UJ flange for some I knew to be hight tensile, and the right length,
