V4 knocking at higher revs!! *Essex*

Postby Grosch2000 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 1:35 pm

Hello Translovers!
I got a problem with a "new" engine from another Transit. The problem is that its knocking bad at higher rpm but not at lower rpms, its rattling or knocking. Oil pressure light flickering at low rpm, but not at higher rpms. I assume its getting some more pressure. Removed the pan twice now. The engine has not been moved for about 25-35 years. Gonna post some pictures and video.

Best regards.

Sounds stupid but was told by a old mechanic never use anything but 20/50 mineral.

Only 15w40 and 20w50 have been used as long i have owned it. And i can mention that the crankshaft pulley is a bit harder on intake stroke on the 2# cylinder (in the cabin, right hand) so you need to pull harder to crank the crankshaft on intake and as you can its tapping sound on the piston 2 (rear crankshaft) its very loose. Everything point to broken rod bearing. But im open for some more suggestions. Im 18 though, maybe someone older than me have some experience about the machine.

Regards

If the first video is your engine the big end bearing has gone, the second video I've seen elsewhere on you tube and is presumably not your engine.

Thanks for the reply Baconsdozen! You are pretty right big end bearing is nearly vanished (naaah just kidding, but its not much of the bearing). And the second one is my engine but with text from Messenger (facebook) anyway thanks for the reply. Its going for the car inspection this week but the oil pan its not installed but the new bearing are installed so i just need to torque up the bolt for the conrod (gonna use right calibrated). Im gonna upload the picture of that bearing later.

Big regards
Jacob

Thanks for pretty quickly replys anyway!

Be careful when tightening the big end bolts. It's easy to damage the heads.
I replaced mine with aircraft spec, socket headed bolts as the previous owner had damaged two which were then very difficult to remove.
