after my holidays starting next week i need to change my diff also
because i have a daihatsu fourtrack 2800 diesel engine and 5 speed trans with the org 1700 V4 diff
mine was a FT130 and according to the Haynes manual i still have the stock 5.83 diff and i gues i need to go to a 4.63 diff
in a Salisbury type axle housing

still not sure about the 4.63 diff though
so iff you have any ideas on this matter please let me know

The replacement diff has been fine. Done couple hundred miles on it now and still quiet Any assembly problems would have started to show by now. The ratio I've got now is 5.13 rather than the 4.63, simply as I couldn't find one that anyone could guarantee was silent.
As I've stated before I will be going 5 speed eventually with a better engine too, so I thought the 5.13 was a sensible compromise. I have no intention of sitting on motorways at 70mph all day long anyway, and the difference between the 5.13 and 4.63 probably only amounts to 5 mph anyway.
As to what you change to is up to you, ie what you want the van for and what ratio you can get hold of. I will say the lack of soundproofing in the FT Transits doesn't help matter either, something else I will be addressing in the future.

indeed the noise combined to the low top speed is my main concern now
i know the van isn't as fast as my 1974 ford econoline with V8 302 engine
but i guess my transit can do better than 50 mph

You see part of the problem, and I've discussed this via email with Doug on here who has also just bought an FT that also looking down the same routes, most older diesels are flat out at 3000rpm some less than that depending on what it is, so it doesn't matter if you've got a 4.63 with 5th, you'll be doing well to get to the 65/70mph mark anyway. I'm not saying that the issue with yours as I've no idea on a Daihatsu's rev limit, but you get my meaning. It only the more modern diesels that rev a lot higher that will work with our TW set ups. Its also part of the reason I'm choosing to use a petrol Zetec which is much more able to work at high revs, plus it easy to get to work these days with virtually everything you need off the shelf.

Thanks Ken for posting this information which is in my opinion one of the most useful posts I have ever read on here! Honestly I am bit surprised it has taken this long for anyone to realise that these later CWP's were basically the same as the earlier parts, and it always takes a "pioneer" like yourself to "give it a go" and show the rest of us the way.

Thanks Conrad. I have to be honest here, although I too had my suspicions, it was Abbey Transmissions who finally let the cat out of the bag to me inadvertently. I just went from there. I suspect the sticking point for some will be getting the newer pinion machined and redrilled to suit early props. I'm fortunate in as much I have my own mini workshop, otherwise I wouldn't have attempted it either!! The other option of course is to change the flange on the prop, but I bet that isn't cheap.

brilliant post and work carried out here just a shame about the lack of ratios available i want some high gears for cruising the 500 plus mile to the track. my truck has a four speed auto any ideas on the fourth gear ratio or is it just an overdrive type thing anyone know?

Why not change the seal then? Just mark pinion nut, count the turns needed to remove it, change seal change crush washer, then do it back up the same number of turns using Locktite. Done Ford Anglia leaking diffs the same way loads of times. You're not changing anything as log as you do the nut up the same turns.

I got my oil from an Agricultural supplies in the end. Local motor factors and the local Ford place were useless.

It was either 75/140 or 80/140, I cant remember which now. What ever is supposed to be in the newer Transits. I gleaned the info off this forum by search. Just done a 200 +mile round trip to Harpenden on Wednesday. Still silent!!

ok cheers,in the manual it says sae90,ep,or 85-90,gl-5spec,which is best as is the 85-90gl-5 semi synthetic so will be thinner oil i want to put the right spec in,whats best as ep90 is cheap std gearoil

I got one from a MK5 6 stud, is the same as MK6 afaik
