It could have alreayd been stuffed then, it seems 50/50 wether your sender can give up or not. You may need another Mk2 one then, don't consider a Mk3 one as they won't work on a Mk2. Unless your gauge was from a Mk3! that may be your problem, and the dash is easier to find than the sender unit.

Hi All,

This is a very old thread - but we're having similar woes. I had a look at the temperature gauge on Transitandy's camper today and found the same problems.

Andy's camper.... http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=56747

Bear in mind this is a Mk4 Banana in a Mk1 Chassis with a Mk1 cluster. However, it is absolutely clear that the original cluster has had separate fuel and temp gauges added at a later date. This could have been done when the Mk4 banana went in, or could have been due to a failure of the original gauges - I doubt we'll ever know.

The Mk4 temp sender is reading ~ 1k Ohms cold to ~ 250 Ohms warm. These are way out of range for the gauges described above (and I assume the original cluster). I don't think the sender is faulty... but if anyone does have a Mk4 kicking about, I'd be really grateful to get a cold (and hot if possible) resistance across the sender just to confirm this.

If the sender is working correctly, I think the easiest option is to find a matched gauge as I simply don't have the skills to construct a voltage stabiliser and shunt for the original gauge - and even if I did, I don't know if the original gauge works anyway. I suspect not, due to the addition of the other gauges. The other gauges of course, being additions, are unidentifiable in any sensible form.

Andy is understandably keen to try to keep the camper cosmetically original where possible so we'd like to either get a gauge that matches the Mk4 which we can put into the original cluster, or a sender which fits the Mk4 thermostat housing and matches the original gauge range.

So, your quest for today :D :D :D :D :D

- Least preferable 'cos we don't know if the gauges work: ....Anyone know of a simple way to get a Mk4 Sender matched to a Mk1 Gauge?

- Preferred Option: Anyone know of any Fords (probably of the same era to the Mk4...1993) that ran a seperate temp gauge that matches a Mk4 sender? If so, we'll start looking around scrappies. It might be on an Escort, Orion, Granada whatever, if it works we'll find it.

- Last Option: Buy an aftermarket sender and gauge. Don't like this idea but will do if necessary, and it should be the easiest. This raises questions.... how does the aftermarket sender fit? I doubt it will be the same thread/pitch as the existing sender... so does it go inline in a water hose or something?

Would really appreciate any thoughts chaps.... The temp gauge is the only thing holding Andy back from actually driving it any distance.

If it helps, Andy could put up some photos of the cluster and sender (as long as he sorts out that bloody auto-focus  )

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Hoping someone can help Us out,
I've got a 98 Transit (SWB), don't know whether it was petrol or diesel before it's current status, it's had a major make over and is running a sweet 351 on gas...
The dash gauges are all standard by looks, but the fuel gauge shows empty when gas tank is approx 1/3 full... hoping to find out the dash gauge resistances so we can replace the sender on the gas tank to match it...

hi all

Resurrecting an old thread as I can't seem to find the info that I am after and thought one of you lovely folks might be able to help...

Just picked up a 98 Transit that has been converted from 2.5D to an old capri V6 engine... Looks like the dash gauges are from the original vehicle (although previous owner did say that they were replaced at some point). the fuel gauge reads just under half regardless of whether it is full or not - I was wondering if anyone knows what the EXPECTED resistance of the original fuel sender was?

I think the fuel tank has been replaced with an onld capri one too and I will have to measure the resistance at empty and full and fit an external fuel gauge if I can't find out what the dash is expecting...

any help appreciated
