There's more than one type of sierra type 9, some with long input shafts and some with short and you don't need to change the rear end just remove the sierra gearstick, as you allmost said, some know and some don't

The Transit Type 9 box has a gear lever that comes up from underneath and bolts to the bottom of the bit you can see through. Hens teeth are pretty easy to find compared to a Type 9 gear lever  You will also need the correct cross member and prop if you dont already have them :) 5 speed type 9 boxes fitted to MK3 Transits 1986 to about 1990.

and TBH I wouldnt bother with the type 9. Its not a strong gearbox in the transit. The transit MT75 is far easier to get hold of.

yes your right they are hard to find thats because the world and his wife want em, i had an 88 swb van with a type 9 box no problems at all, also fitted one in my mk1 in 2002 second hand and thats still going strong

I think the argument against the type 9 was that it can let go with no warning when in a transit, I know they'll handle big bhp in escorts/ sierra's etc but its the torque and a heavily loaded van that can be the end of them.

On the old type9s you would loose reverse first then the rest would follow, the simple fact is the main case is weak and distorts under big loads, theye were never rated that high and put one in a twin wheeler with wieght in the back and hense way too much grip the maincases simple distort, the teeth dont mesh correctly and get chipped ect even the stronger V6 box was marginal on a standard V6, they dont actually handle a lot of power in cars, well rather they do "untill" traction is sorted then they explode
MT75 is a way way better box but then when i had my Mk2 i spent ages sorting a type9 simply cos it fitted without cutting the floor so who am i to speak, well i'm the bloke whos just blown his 3rd diesel type9 in his P100  and thats a H/D vesion next one will have the alloy top plate (which wont fit a transit box unfortunatly) :(

sorry but I would live with a plate in the floor over a box that could go bang without warning!

 its just a plate in the floor. As there isnt such a thing as a new (recon aside) type9, you are less likely to know what you are getting. Another reason to keep away from the type9.......
