i wouldnt trust secondhand electrics as most people say it worked fine when it was in the car....and how do you know theyve took it out correctly  - ive looked at that option and the stuff on ebay is normally incomplete :( -

isnt the corsa b unit for rack? as i know it can be used on cortinas and stuff

im wondering weather ldv powers teering box would fit..seems a logical choice (assuming it fits)

the LDV guru would answer this question...
i have heard but not seen a landrover defender ps system modified to fit a mk2.
the fitting of a ps pump to an engine is the easy bit, so it dosent matter what engine you have.
most engines have set ups (lugs etc) on the side of the block and ends of the crank pullys to fit extra pullys and pumps onto.

i was lucky to get hold of a mk3 ps box setup and without trying to rub it in, it is the way to go.
albeit even with a v6 in the front too, using a std mk2 steering wheel it is almost too good, you only need a little too much
steering of the wheel and your in the ditch, but you get used too it.

i have also heard of the electric kits being put onto old series landrovers where you flick a switch when at slow speeds and trying to park etc, as you dont need ps when driving. will look for a link

I fitted a Mk3 power box to a Mk1 camper about 8 years ago. Now if I remember right-

The mounting holes are different so I made a large right angled adaptor plate out of 6mm steel plate, cut out the existing mount and welded it in it's place.

I used the Mk3 drop arm but the front ball joint on the drag link had to be changed ( take drop arm & link to a motor factor and annoy them).

My Mk1 was a diesel so standard Di pump then the hoses where fabricated at our local hydraulic shop.

The column was Mk3 but with Mk1 steering wheel and switches grafted on. Can't remember details although some thing to do with a bearing at the top.

I recall studying an LDV400 box and nearly going for it as there were loads around then but a Mk3 one come up.

Hope this helps :D

i looked at an ldv box to go on mine but on a ldv they go threw the chassis and not to the side of as on a transit so you got a lot of cutting etc

I've saw power steering LHD mk2 (looked like westfalia), and it was quiet like one I've putted (with some mods) into mine:
Steering box is from LHD BMW 7er (E23), gladly hexagon shaft (on box exit) was same as mk2 original, only angle was different, so couple of hours with file and job well done!
Also I've used steering column from Nissan patrol, rubber from suzuki vitara and u-joint is from E23.

Some pics.:

And those who doubt it, just must go with this mod, it feels like heaven, I've also putted 2,9 V6 into my tranny, and in first test drive power steering felt better than engine
Beware to check column movement, in which direction it rotates! (for RHDrivers)
Hope it helps...

Mk2 Power Steering

Postby carnut1100 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 11:58 pm

I've seen a power rack on a Mk1.....
Was solid mounted though so bump steer would be an issue...
Can't see why a long sliding joint and a rack mounted solidly on the beam axle wouldn't work....
