overdrive crossmember.

Postby walt1984 » Sat Jul 28, 2012 5:53 pm

hi, ive got a overdrive gearbox for our mk 1 camper. it came with crossmember mount but its from a 89 mk3 so the crossmember hangers (if thats what there called) that bolt to chassis leg and spring hanger then crossmember are different. can i get theses any more? is the overdrive crossmember a standard mk2 gearbox crossmember?
thanks.

the last one i seen in a mk2 seemed to use the std crossmember with the overdrive unit more or less bolted down through it with a piece of rubber sheet in between the bracket bolted to the housing and the flat section of the member. dont know if its the original fixing or not.

The cross members are different. The overdrive version has the centre section dropped down a few inches so it ends up a sort of shallow U shape.
If you look carefully at the Mk1 chassis there are various alternative bolt holes for the crossmemeber and the centre bearing. If your box has the older hanging mount on it you might have to give the floor a good seeing to with a lump hammer to clear the old mounting.
Its possible to cut and reweld the standard cross member to accomodate the overdrive box,the exhaust down pipes also need reshaping to clear it.There is a section on here somewhere on here which details how I converted my mk1.

hi, not had chance to get on here for a while.
been buying some more bits, i think i.ve got the correct stepped cross member hangers and a 2 piece prop that came off a mk3 luton that had a overdrive box in it but i'm not sure the axle flange on mk1 will mate to prop flange.
i,m collecting various bits for winter when camper is off road.
not sure how to add pictures i'd like to do a progess report on little bits done already. :D
