Flywheel ring gear

Postby j6393 » Sat Oct 13, 2012 11:48 am

Every so often the starter on my 1967 Transit (V4) doesn't engage and it seems that the ring gear is loosing a tooth.
Just moving the engine over a couple of degrees allows the starter to engage but ring gears for a V4 are apparently hard to get in Australia.
Does anyone know if the ring gear can be turned or if the same ring gear might be fitted to another model?

i had same issue - starter missed gear(it seemed) but if i stuck in 3rd with foot off clutch, started it would catch, and if i pressed clutch in at right time van would always turn over.. was convinced it was the ring gear

BUT

when i swapped engines over i examined the ring gear- was fine was actually starter gear was fkd....

check your starter it might just need new drive gear!!

Thanks Robbie.

Originally I blamed the starter and got a brand new one but still had the problem - rock it in gear forwards or backwards or simply pull the fan belt over a couple of inches to turn the motor over slightly and no problem starting.

Must be time to pull the bell housing & gearbox off to have a good look.

You can get a new ring gear , crack the old one off,
Heat up the new one whilst laid on Flywheel,
when expanded enough should slip down into place
