More ponies from the pinto

Postby DodgeRover » Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:14 pm

I could do with more torque from my 2.0 other than trying to get hold of a towing cam is there anything much that can be done? I don't want to have an engine that produces mega power but has to be rev'd hard to do so if you know what i mean? All the references on the net seem to be aimed at pure BHP.
I'm currently looking for a 4 branch manifold...

What carb do you have at the mo? single choke is ok for more power low down compaired to a twinchoke but they run out of flow higher up the rav range so a car twinchoke will help it feel more powerfull (but it will need setting up on a rolling road to get the jetting spot on) as will a tubular ex manifold.
For a cam i like the FR30 high torque cam or Burton power do a cheaper alternative (often called the caravan cam), an EFi head flows better than the carb head so will free up a few extra horses and make more power lower down the rev range, all pretty simple bolt on jobs, i would do the carb last as it will need setting up for any change to the other compoinants or do it all at once and then get it jetted correctly :D

is it your original engine :?: as it will be low compression

Put a 1.6 head on it, smaller ports will give better low down torque. As mentioned fr30 cam, it has short duration but high lift, but don't forget to fit the correct oil seals for your valve guides as normal ones can be too high.

Don't go large bore on the exhaust, it robs low down power, just freeflow exhaust. K&N air filter, electronic ignition, all adds a bit throughout the range.

Currently running the original LC 2.0 block (not the 205), standard electronic ignition, it has a single choke weber fitted, I have a cone filter to go on with the LPG carb when I fit it.
Does the LC engine run dished pistons to lower the compression or a different head?
Is the injection head from a late sierra?

To be honest its not too bad power/ torque wise when its empty but load it up with tools and materials and its rather steady when you get to a hill :D

You'll need an EFI Head when running LPG and, get a Gizmo that alters advance when on Gas or, your power will go down about 20% 8)

Gotta 4 Branch here for £40 that will help breathing

Cool was looking at one for a RS2000 on the bay but yours sounds more sensible, is that ready modified to fit the transit or does it need tweaking?

No the pistons are flat topped same as HC but compression height (measured from gudgeon pin to crown) is lower :!: ie pistons do not finish level with top of bore at TDC

few reasons for fitting LC engines in transits (and other vehicles) but one of the main reasons was that they (transits) were sent all over the planet including places where fuel quality was sh*t (lower octane)parts of the USSR and Africa amongst others.....just another bit of info you didnt need to know

If I could get hold of crossfuel regular i'de be tempted to leave it as low compression :)

Find an old carb'd turbo kit from a Cortina or Escort. That will give you lots more torque, and if you keep the boost sensible (say 6 or 7 psi) then the LC engine will work well with it:)

What a terrible thing to suggest!) I'm off to have a look at a home brew turbo setup on a pinto caterham at the weekend now, but sensibly I think that might be a long term project though - can't have the van off the road for any length of time as i'll not be earning
