lucas/CAV on a MK2 questions.

Postby swear_bear » Thu Mar 27, 2014 10:32 am

I got a leak in my diesel pump on my MK2 camper(standard Pinto motor AFAIK) and I am wondering will
there be any timing issues if i unhook the pump and change the gaskets and then "just" put the
pump back. I am wondering since the pump is mechanic and runs via the timing belt and
has a separate connection to each cylinder. I am also assuming that I will get air in the
fuellines and have to purge it before i try to start the engine again.

I have tried to search but i haven't found any real info so that why I am starting a new thread.

thanks for any help.

A pinto is petrol mate. Sounds like you have an early Di (which answers my question in your other thread). If you take the pump off, you need to lock the timing/engine in place first. There are holes in the flywheel that you insert dowels (even drill bits) into to prevent the engine slipping out of timing. The good news is the CAV Lucas pump doesnt have fussy injectors so the pumps are interchangeable.

the belt is gonna stay where it is for now since I've mashed my hands and fingers enough :D
All I need to know how to lock up the flywheels so i can remove pump without having injection
issues later on.

Oh and thank you for the link to that thread :)

Is there a timing issue when putting the pump back?
Or can you just smack it back on there and everything is hunky-dory?

The leak is coming from the other end of the thing
In the middle but the other end, where it presses on
a plunger.

Ok so now I have identified the part thats leaking, I think...
Its the coldstart piston that seems to have sprung a leak, supposedly
one can change the seals without removing the pump from the engine.

The Diesel Technician I have been mailing with talks about a riveted plate
on the pump that's supposed to have the version number on it. I can't find
the poxy thing and i don't want to remove the pump before i know i can repair
it, since the motor runs as is, it just leaves a drip trail of fuel.

So one simple question right now thatonly requires a yes or a no.

Will removing the lucas CAV pump from my engine while having the gears
and cam shaft etc locked with pins screw up the injection timing?

Yes, it will, you will need to set up your injection timing again after refitting the pump

You need to remove the cam belt to remove the pump timing sprocket, mark the pump shaft in relation to the sprocket before removal (i cant recall if its splines or a keyway, better to mark it incase), also note, as the pump sprocket is adjustable, note the position of its adjustment and then mark it, now you can remove the pump sprocket, then you can remove the pump, do your seal and then you know where it all needs to go back to on reassembly
