Started Beryl's paint

Postby FredTransit » Wed Apr 16, 2014 6:41 pm

As Beryl's 30 this year, I thought I would give her a bit of a makeover. She's been with us about two thirds of her life, and has only been painted once since we got her. That was to change her from white to blue and I think that respray involved her being in the same barn as some paint.
So, I have decided to go the coach enamel and rollers route. This is now paint job number six for me! From the look of me hands you would think I am painting myself too.....
Only done the cab so far, its only a third of the van but the fiddliest bit due to the masking.
Will put the pics up later as they are on Gary's phone....

This one's off mine.

Compare the cab with the body...... That's only 1 coat (though obviously not a colour change) and it only took about half a litre!! It was thinned a little bit, with celly thinners.

That looks well.I'm a bit jealous.
I'm trying to work myself up to doing my motorhome later,it will have to be a brush paint job as I've no choice but to do it outside.

I didn't see your reference that you'd used rollers,I had before that they give a better finish than a brush but hadn't seen any proof so far. That looks a good finish, how long before the paint had got a skin?. Where I live now it always seems to be windy and dusty and paint that is reasonably quick drying would be a big advantage.

What paint are you using Fred? Once its good and hard you can always flat it back and polish it to remove any minor marks, coach enamel used to be the recommended stuff for brush painting as it took a while to dry and the brush marks would come out. You can thin synthetic with petrol for cheapness but it takes even longer to dry than normal

by the time I had finished the passenger side the top of drivers door was touch dry
It must be synthetic cos I was recommended to use thinners?

Reaching the luton with a roller on a pole was surprisingly easy!

Image

didn't have a pop riveter so had a bit of a bodge at the top of the body

Still up the ladder started the shutter

with the body done, sprayed the bumpers and grille

FINISHED!!
