Wouldn't make much difference in that state - even if bolted they would still be 'welded' with rust.

How do you take the wings off? Are they welded on or bolted?

They spot welded on if you putting new cut them off and said above door pillers gone behind wing plus the water channels gone

Ahhhh sh*t :( there's not much more I can do then :/ I'm not a mechanic and we would need to get a welder in to cut everything out and replace :/

I could do with stripping the paint off it to see why we actually have, think it need to invest in a soda blaster!

tbh if i were you i'd get a mig welder and some bits of scrap - practice and practice - go on mig welding forum pick up loads of tips then just dive in and give it a go - mig welding isnt that difficult if you look at where your going wrong.

just do it a bit at a time- most of the floor can be patched and ground down for hardly any cost just lots of time - the sills as muttley says are repro panels and you can even get fibreglass wings but i have never tried them

if you have the enthusiasm you'll finish it but if you get fed up at least you can sell it on for someone else to finish :D

yeah we plan on finishing it!........ but plans dont always come togethor haha

i wouldnt mind having a go at painting it but we dont have anywhere to do the work yet..... needs to be indoors ideally.

my dad will want it done properly and not a botch up by me haha!

ideally we dont want fibreglass wings as it wont be original, it would be worth alot more with original wings.

i need loads of parts though, front light surrounds as they are corroded, the bonnet is a bit worse for wear! but i think that can be fixed with a well trained welder!

i have got someone coming round tonight to see how to go about it and to help me get a parts list as such togethor so i can start hunting.

Here are come more pics I took yesterday! From what I can see the chassis seems ok, no holes (I think), some surface rust. What does everyone think? I had someone from a Bodyshop come today and they said it's too much for them but once the welding etc is done they will do the bodywork.

so yesterday i drove down to see Ralph to pick up some parts.

V4 engine,
2 x front wings
1 x bonnet
steering wheel centre cap
chrome front bumper

Very happy with the parts. the bonnet needs a bit of repairing but is a million times better than the one thats on ours.

Forgot to take pictures but will upload when i have. It should be getting transported to the unit ASAP so i can properly strip it and get it welded.

I will keep this topic updated with pictures for those who are interested.

I have never really done anything like this so should be interesting ;)

Sounds good. Will be nice to see it done up. I've learnt to mig weld with our mk1s. You just have to keep trawling ebay, gumtree etc for parts.
I picked up nos brake pads, track rod ends and gaskets at a autojumble.

I will get some pics this weekend, when I get home it is dark unfortunately.

We bought a big box of bits which is full of door handles and stuff like that so need to trawl through that. Last time I looked there were brake pads and stuff so hopefully some goodies In there.

We have just acquired a unit so it will be getting towed there so I can work on it over winter.

Will be buying a sand blaster and air compressor this week. Will be stripping it in the coming weeks and start cutting out the rust!

I will be cleaning and painting the engine. We need to decide on a colour,,we want orange but not sure which shade. I have an orange focus st and would like it that colour but without the pearl/metallic effect. Has anyone on here got an orange mk1??

There are some pics on the previous page...... Be warned it is NOT a pretty sight haha :)

My dad is a builder so has lots of contacts with regards to welders so he is just going to give it them for a weekend to weld up the holes etc :)
