diff pinion seal

Postby Retrohowla » Tue Aug 05, 2014 3:33 pm

Ok guys, long shot i know but does anyone know where i can get a diff pinion seal for a H-type axle?
Ive just fitted a MK1 diff in my 1980 MK2 100L, its now leaking badly and i need to source a new seal, i dont know if the seals are different between MK1 and MK2 H-type axles?

Is type 34 the same as type H?

Update so far is that my van should have a type 34 axle, according to the vin plate, but i believe i have a type h axle, can anyone confirm this from a pic of the diff?

I have been told the part number for my seal is 1709662 and that it is obsolete, so my only hope of replacing it is getting the dimensions and having one made i guess, unless anyone has a better idea?

Didn't the older transit axles nearly all (type 32, 34, 51, 52 and 53) have the same pinion seal :?: seem to be readily available at around £6/£7 (for £8 you can get one with a new diff gasket as well) but don't forget you should really fit a new collapsible collar whenever you remove/replace the flange (which you need to do if you change the seal)

If that's the case then it would be very handy to get the part numbers of the seals that you think might fit? I've had a diff specialist searching and has ordered a couple but both were too small.
The crush spacer he ordered was also too small :(

Well tis one is listed by the seller as for a type 34 axle
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Transit- ... 2326f6788b
No part number given but different manufacturers have different part numbers anyway so unless you have a list of all available numbers to cross reference you might have to get hold of one or two and try them (as you have already tried)

I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed in a "specialist" that cant sort you out :?: has he not come across a Transit axle before  or is he one of the type that say they know what they're dealing with but don't know how to use a cross referencing/specification book or a vernier gauge  (the guy I used to use was a real old school specialist aways had a vernier in one hand and the book in the other and between them and a wealth of knowledge always came up with the goods)

do you have the measurements of the original seal/shaft :?: I have a new gen ford seal and collapsible collar that I got for my truck and could check that one to see how it compares :?:

So, heres the thing, the 'specialist' i refer to only does axles and gearboxes, mainly commercial, when i took him my diff i was told, "no problem, that's bread and butter for me, be done in no time" a week later i called to see how it was going, i was told of the drama of finding a new seal and crush tube, i asked for the old seal to take it to a few suppliers to match it up but unfortunately it as already in the bin, so here i am, no point worrying about what could or would have been, but no old seal and spacer to measure either.
So, im thinking of stripping my other diff myself to get the parts measured, only i don't know if they are different, one is a 1980 diff, the other is from a MK1 of unknown year, i know it fits the axle though.
Also, i am loathed to strip my other diff if i cant get a new crush tube, i will render the spare diff useless also.......

From the parts book, I can confirm that the part number for the seal on your axle is different from the other axles. The 1709662 number is the finis code, but the part number that goes with it is 204E4676.

If you do a search on the part number,

a) it looks like our german friends at motomobil have it in stock at 11.50 euros, and in typical motomobil fashion they use the finis code with an extra digit as their reference, so my guess is it is OK.

b) Motomobil also give the following references when you look up the seal

Manufacturer numbers: # 1709662 # 204E4676 # # 047332-D # 047332D # # GS6119 # 047403 # # 17096620 # #

So maybe worth checking if your local place recognise any of these other numbers

Hope this helps

Doug, thats great thanks, i emailed Motobil this morning asking to confirm that seal fits my van, gave them chassis number and a description of the diff in case it was swapped during its life.
I have also asked them to match up a crush spacer i found on there and some gaskets for half shafts and diff housing, hopefully out german friends come good
Thanks again for the info, i will also check the local suppliers referencing those other numbers

Thanks again :D
