V6 to 24v Conversion

Postby darrenxr3i » Wed Sep 03, 2014 10:50 am

I have my mk2 transit which is already converted to 2.9i V6. My question is, if I wanted to swap over to a Cosworth 24v, would it fit straight in using my existing bits (flywheel, gearbox, mounts, exhaust etc) or would i have to start fabricating new stuff up? I know obviously ecu and wiring is different.

what gearbox is yours :?:

on of the engine mounts needs either extensivly modding or a new one making as the oil filter housing is in the way

but essentially they are the same block - i used a v6 12v adapterplate and flywheel for my conversion :D

Luke,

I might be talking out of my backside, but one of my 2.8 v6s came with what looks like the "oil filter relocation adapter" from the 24v. When I took this adapter off, I could simply screw on a standard filter on it's side just like the early 2.8s. Basically the 24v adapter seems to just bolt onto the normal filter plate using a special threaded "bolt".

You have a 24v engine and I don't, so you can tell better than me, but is it possible to just remove the relocation adaptor and say use the filter fitting from the 2.9 12v engine so that you don't need to modify the mounting ?

Cheers

Doug

not sure which box i have.. its a reverse left and up so i am thinking type 9...

Mine runs and is done so might be easier to leave as it is, although the gearstick seems in a awkward position - my van is lhd and the stick opening seems to be angled back and left

keeping it lhd is better for the 24v conversion as the rhd servo fouls the plenum but the lhd one should be well out of the way as the engines are offset to the right :D

The type 9 will break with the cosworth lump, upper limit is 200bhp in a 1 ton car.

heads on the 24v are wider than the 12v as well, and if it is a BOB engine (out of the frog eye scorpio) consider a timing chain change as they do break. the older BOA engine (granada) didnt seem to suffer the same thing. cracking engine though. I've a fondness for a v8 though... :D
