Who knows about steering boxes

Postby limitedblack » Sun Oct 05, 2014 3:25 pm

Well, new to me.... Steering Box.

I've got to sort something on my Lada steering box. I've sourced an old fiat 124 box that's near enough the same, but not got a clue how the thing should be.

I know they are all different, but I imagine the principles are the same.

Nut and screw on top to tweak it, shims to centre it??

The one I have is tight when at center, but sloppy at each end, is this wrong, right, fixable ???

Help required.....

Ahhh, that's the problem. It's so tight that the center link had to be bent, and the bellhousing cut away to miss it. There is no room for it, well not much.

Ackerman principle I think it's called, get it wrong, and you have bad handling.

there must be .................zetec and steering box

i'd forgot how bad they were when i got my firevan back on the road that has a good steering box and its still crap :x

even when they are new the design of them is inferior to a rack - sloppy at the end and tight in the middle will proberbly be worn i doubt there much you can do with it unless it will clean up, you can only take the play out of the best bit.

i'd look again at a rack conversion ............... but thats just me

Well it's a classic mini steering rack, as that's the closest.

I like the box, because its crap, I just want it less crap ;)

What you need is a steering rack from a mid 80's mk2 cavalier. The steering control arms pivot from the middle of housing(see pic on link- where gaiters are) so sorting out bump steer is not really an issue as such. You can get non power versions as well. Ebay link is to give you an idea. I think some other Vauxhalls use similar set up Astra's etc.

Hillman Imp uses a much smaller version of the same idea, but I think you'll find your magic wand before you find one of those and ou'd have to mount it in front of the x member not behind!!!

But you get the idea.

Bedford Rascal/Suzuki Van one is about half the length of that, but steers from the end the same way, but in both cases check it turns the right way for you application otherwise, roundabouts could become very interesting lol
