MK1 on LPG

Postby stirred » Fri Oct 24, 2014 7:54 am

First of all hi to everyone as I am new in the forum.

I live in Germany where the VW T2 is (like everywhere) overvalued thus was thinking to switch to the Mk1 which I like even more.
As here mostly the gasoline models 1.7cc are available (old firemans car, diesel hard to find), the idea was the LPG conversion.
I was discouraged to do it as they say it will be slow, but ok, 80km/h will still work for me.

Please could you tell me how much speed would I loose and if you think the LPG on the 1.7cc is a good choice?

Thanks!

The speed on LPG is about 8% less than Petrol so.....No problem!

The 1.7 V4 has soft valve seats so will not like LPG for long.

You will have to fit hardened valve seats to the cylinder heads.

A later 2.0 Ford Sierra engine can just be fitted and will be more

powerful, economical and will run on LPG with no problems 8)

You will need to use either a flashlube kit to protect the valves or have the heads converted to hardened valve seats or they will wear out quickly on either LPG or modern unleaded petrol.

I doubt you will notice any speed difference at all between running on gas and running on petrol to be honest, the main limiting factor for speed with the firevans is the diff, not the amount of power the engine produces.
