Is that a type9 from a car? If so the gearlever will come up near your handbreak!

Its a Transit box but you will need the gear stick .

Ah it was the lack of bellhousing that confused Me. Now the bad news, unless you are replacing a type9, the gearlever are very hard to get hold of. Oh and the Mk2 only had the 4 speed and 4 speed overdrive, no 5 speed. So this will be a Mk3 box. You will also need a crossmember if you are doing a conversion.

You will also need the bellhousing reverse light switch.

Using the 4 speed bellhousing requires a bit of engineering.

The bore in the centre of the bellhousiing for the input shaft cover where the cover bolts to the gearbox, is bigger for the 5 speed than for the 4 speed.

Also the syncro rod pokes out in 2nd and 4th gear between and above the two top bellhousing to gearbox bolts. The 5 speed bellhousing has a cup to accept the syncro rod but the 4 speed box does not. The cup needs to be sealed to the gearbox as the oil comes out with the syncro rod and if not sealed you will end up with oil in the bellhousing and possibly on the clutch.

And as others have said, finding a gearstick is almost impossible.

Also I think that you should only use this 5 speed with a petrol engine, diesel engines rev too slowly for the oil to circulate so the laygear bearings wear out quickly. So you should rebuild the gearbox first as the laygear bearings can be very worn and the gearbox falls apart once they wear too much.

Cheers

Many thanks to all for the replies.

The original idea is avoid cutting the propshaft and the other problems by using this type 9 gearborx.

So the best option is finding a later mk3 5 speed aluminium gearbox, cutting the original propshaft, new crossmember and open a hole in the floor for the gearstick right?

By alli gearbox do you mean the MT75? It's a far better gearbox than the type9, and the bit extra work is worth it. I am pretty sure the MT should match up to the York, perhaps somebody could confirm?

Thought so, same block isn't it? In that case, go for the MT75.

odd you said they dont do a mk2 5 speed as i bought an engine and box from a running mk2 years ago with a transit type 9 attached - it was a mk2 minibus - the engine and box are prety knackered and i wasnt sure what to do with it but if transit type 9 parts are rare it might be of use to somone - the gearbox was a bit crunchy in 2nd that was all

Just because it was fitted in a Mke, doesn't mean it was the factory did it!

They did fit the 5 speed type 9 into the MK2 for the last year of production, i had a new one with a Di in '85.
