Is there a reason this bigger oil filter was fitted?

Postby 1958 harry » Fri Jul 03, 2015 12:05 pm

My ex german fire brigade transit was last serviced by the Germans at the end of 2013 before it came to the UK (it's done less than 1000 miles since) I've gone through serviced it now I'm going to change the oil, but it appears to have the wrong oil filter fitted.

From the Burtons site it should have an EFL90 fitted, but for some reason they've fitted an EFL600 which is for a 1.6/1.7 zetec. It obviously fits doesn't leak and works, but is there a reason for fitting this larger filter (better oil flow/filtration? ) or is it simply they fitted the best one they could get.

I'm wondering should I order the correct filter or the same as the one on there.

As far as I can tell it's a standard 1978 2.0 Pinto and the van is all matching numbers as far as I can tell.

servicing on these fire trucks was meticulous.I would fit same as is fitted.

Thanks I was thinking the same.

Just curious as to why they would have used this filter?

When this filter is fitted to the "Zetec" engine is it fitted in the same plain as a pinto (ie horizontal) :?:

what pressure does a "Zetec" oil pump operate at :?:

I would assume that a larger filter would take longer to fill/pressurise at start up so possibly leaving engine "under lubed" for longer (albeit probably for less than a second) pinto camshafts get worn quick enough as it is due to being at the highest point of the engine with fairly crude lubrication system :!:

Personally I would fit the original spec EFL90 (was good enough for these engines for years before the Zetec even existed) and would have been fitted for most of the vans earlier life

Cheers RVM.

I've ordered the correct EFL90 and I'll fit that. I'll get it changed this week sometime :)
