Aaarrgghh! Changed oil and now it's rattling it's nuts off!

Postby 1958 harry » Thu Jul 09, 2015 5:25 pm

Just serviced the Firevan.  Put 10w40 castrol get semi synthetic in it (it was on sale in Tesco) and fitted the correct EFL90 (well halfords equivalent) oil filter (it had a zetec EFL600 oil filter on it).

Now the engine once it warms up sounds really rattly, like piston slap or cam knock.

It's an ex German Fire van so has low mileage on it, and sounded fine before the oil change. I've checked the timing just in case it was that but that's made no difference.

I'm guessing the oil I've put in is too thin hence the noise.

I'm going to order an EFL600 filter and refit that as thats what i took off instead of the EFL90 I've fitted but what oil do people recommend for a Pinto?

Am I on the right track here or is it something else?

Not really it's an old van, I'm just going through it. Wasn't expecting it to start knocking after an oil change!

I've not had any major issues just like things to be right.

My Defender had a LOT more problems.

I've got some 20w50 Halfords classic oil and a genuine Ford EFL600 oil filter to go back on.

I hope that cures it if not, oh dear. :(

Was told by a old guy that worked on essexs not to use anything but 20/50 mineral or it would knock and do (his words) the bottom end
Something to do with older engines dont like modern oils.
