Thanks, mines a mk2 with a Pinto so I assume some of the mk1 issues won't apply? From what I've seen my mk2 crossmember will fit a Type 9 OK.

Did you rebuild the rear diff yourself then? Are there companies who could do it for me?

So a mk6 4.63 rear diff would fit my mk2 I'd just need a mk4 prop flange? What about the drives shafts do they fit the mk6 diff OK?

From what I have seen, the Pinto engined Mk2 gear change hole is in the same place as the Mk1 ie left of the centre line. But I can't say that it is exactly the same. All the Ford gearboxes with the gearchange mechanism on the side, have the mechanism on the left side so it would make sense that the hole was made to take all the side change boxes.

For the crossmember, you will need to check the "shoe" support. The type 9 has a specific rubber "shoe" at the rear. The height of the shoe support is also different between the 4 speed and the type 9. Obviously the original can be adapted but it is easier if you get the type 9 crossmember.

Here is the reference to Ken B article with photos to show what you need to do to re-drill the prop flange to connect to the diff

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=111158

You need to put the later crown wheel and pinion onto your existing diff as the later diff unit itself is different. Luckily I had a mate do it for me, but he had no problems.

If you can get the parts, then changing to a 4.63 final ratio is the easier job, so that is where I would start and see how it goes.

Well I think hopefully I have found an overdrive setup. OK it's not original but it's period correct for the van and am option it could have had when new.

The Overdrive unit is supposed to drop the revs by around 20% so instead of approx 4300rpm at 50mph it'll be doing more like 4000rpm at 65mph which I can live with.

Hopefully it's a good unit and all fits OK!

No it won't. I think you can just turn the gearstick to the correct angle.

I been told that if I put a type 9 into my mk2 I need gearbox crossmember and gearstick unless it came out of a lhd too If I put a MT75 in I have to cut new hole for gearlever and don't want to do that as trying to keep van as original as poss. The early Mk3 transits have type 9 5speed and will fit if you use crossmember. I running pinto with a 4:56 diff instead of the original 4:11 as I got larger profile tyres on it, it is rather heavy unladed (due to having 7 seats) but will sit as 60/65mph but does rev bit high so uses more fuel hence reason to fit 5 speed, worse with caravan on the back

I've now gone down the Overdrive route, just bought the complete setup from an 88 mk3 Di, got everything, loom, prop, overdrive gearstick, overdrive gearbox and crossmember.

The only slight issue is its from a factory lengthened Xlwb car transporter transit so has a 3 piece 2 bearing prop so I don't know if the props going to fit if I remove the centre bit, but we'll see. I might be able to make it work if I combine it with my prop.

Everything is there and I got it out of a running/driving van so it should all be good. The van was only being scrapped because the chassis had literally snapped in half due to rot and the MOT expires in a few weeks.

The Overdrive gearstick seems to just be a normal gearstick with heatshrink and the wire running down it, so if it's not possible to turn the one I have around for LHD I'll just turn my LHD stick into an overdrive one :)

I was advised when fitting gearbox wire the overdrive switch through a relay to take the load off the switch because the switch with supposed to be like hens teeth.
