Problem with inspection MK1

Postby madog2mad » Thu Oct 01, 2015 3:09 pm

Hey guys,

I have changed my engine to bigger one and havent inspected it, they have never complained about or paid attention. It's currently with Ford Scorpio 2.3i -97. However, now suddenly there was a dic% inspector and didnt let it through and put into papers that not accepted. So I am pretty much screwed. I either have to put in smaller engine or find papers of the 3.0L Ford Transit Ambulance. with drum brakes. I can put 20-30% bigger engine here in Finland, compared to biggest one that ford has produced. But has ford produced 3.0 L version, and if so, does anyone have one of those with papers? So I could show those to inspector that they have produced with bigger engine. Otherwise it will be pain in the ass..

Thanks for support!

Don't think ford ever did a 3 litre Mk1 :?: only 1.7 V4, 2.0 V4 and the diesel engine (I stand to be corrected by someone that may know different)

Of course there may have been an SVO :?: :?: :?:

Wikipedia says on Mk1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Transit

"The diesel version's long nose front was also used to accommodate the Ford 3.0 L Ford Essex V6 engine (UK) for high performance applications such as vans supplied to police and ambulance services. In Australia, the Transit went on sale in 1972, with the long-nose diesel front used to accommodate an inline 6-cylinder engine derived from the Ford Falcon."

But I guess this was not done by Ford? By someone else?

Ford will have done the SVO's but I'm thinking that surely they would have fitted disc brakes to the front of a 3 litre V6 :?:

The 4 litre straight 6 was an option in Australia, there should be plenty of info on the net.

There is a mk1 brochure on the mk1/2 section listing a 2 litre petrol 20% bigger than a 2litre is a 2.4 so you should be ok?

i can't remember the exact year ,but i used to work on a mk 1 with 3.0lt essex engine and it had drum brakes , it was an svo ambulance spec vehicle , it had the york diesel long bonnet and front panel , i do remember the drums were big and the same fitment as the rears , it did appear in a couple of episodes of eastenders , the van was blue with graffiti over it , i think it was about a 1972 / 3 , i would think someone on here has a list of svo options and it is mentioned on wikipedia as an svo

if you're allowed 20% to 30% bigger

and a 2litre V4 was pretty normal

2.0 + 30% is 2.6
2.0 + 40% is 2.8

so that will cover your 2.3 which is only 15% bigger

I'm going to put this in the Mk1 section, because many Mk1 owners won't see this here :)

Problem is horsepower. Biggest is 2.0 86hp currently I have found. and + 20% = 104 hp.

Y5A/Y5B
Power: 145 hp (108 kW) @ 5600 rpm

So If I got some papers in their hands with that 3.0l engine and drums I could be well off, I will go by the office today and ask more details. Other option is to put discs in the front and ask "special" permission, but I think it's more painful process. Actually car doesnt move any faster (maybe +10kmh), is just more economic and silent. Or then I need to change smaller engine.

But if someone has one of those ambulances/fire trucks/police cars 3.0l I would be very happy. I have to look into those australian ones as well.

If I understand correctly, you are saying that you either need to show the inspector in Finland that the Mk1 was fitted with an engine of similar power to your 2.3 together with drum brakes, or you have to fit disc brakes. And presumably only to the front axle.

So does the inspector have a problem the engine or is it really the brakes ?

If it is only the brakes on the front axle then that is an easier change than changing the engine. The Mk1 was available with disc brakes from 1973 and the same disc brake parts were used on the Mk2. The easiest thing would be to change to a Mk2 disc braked axle if you can get hold of one and if that keeps the inspector happy.
