Pinto starting issue

Postby Dowsss » Sun May 01, 2016 5:01 pm

Hello guys,
I have a 1979 ford transit adventura motorhome, 2ltr pinto petrol. she has 45k on the clock and runs like a dream however when starting she takes a while to start. even if I was to drive her for 20 mile if I pulled into a garage for a brief stop she will take about 20 seconds of turning over to start???
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Could be fuel evaporating off when it's hot.

What Carb does it have?

Mine takes a while to start when it's been left in storage and not started for a long time as the fuel evaporates out of the fuel bowl. But once started it's fine each and every time until it's left for a long time again.

Maybe the petrol lift pump is getting a little weak and fuel is running back to the tank? However my pinto powered van spins for a while when cold before it goes, it's the same on petrol or lpg, once started it goes more or less straight away.

No, lol, I have an ex German Fire Brigade Transit. Same engine though, mines dine nearly 18k miles from new, but it has its original 1V carb.

would checkout connections, operation of cold start circuit on starter solenoid... if fitted.

I have found an extra non return valve helps when not used for a few days

I split the fuel line on mine between tank and pump and fitted one of those inline bulb type fuel primers. The extra non return valve stops fuel draining back and if the fuel evaporates a couple of squeezes fills the car without having to turn the engine over. Buy a decent one though, not a chinese made thing from ebay, get a branded one from a chandler as they are fitted to outboard motors.
