About to do it...

Postby Paulo Polaroil » Tue May 31, 2016 4:22 pm

Hello guys,

I'm about to buy a Mk2 Transit. 1980, Pinto engine, 4-speed gearbox.
What have I to check ? It has been resprayed from white to black, has 100 000 km on the odometer. New tyres, new brake lining for the rear wheels. Seems to have a small exhaust leak between collector and front tube.

I want to now where I have to nose around to avoid bad surprises.

Questions that will probably come next : how to improve engine output, how to mount a 5-speed gearbox :-)

Thanks for helping !

Usual checks.
Listern for strange noises and smoke.

Rust, check every where for rust, maybe take a torch so you can see better. Look for plates that could have been slapped on to hide rot.
In the uk transits corrode bad.
Not done this myself but from what i can see and type 9 from a mk3 transit should be a straight swap, you will need the cross member and hangers that support the rear of the gear box.
Not sure if you would need a mk3 transit clutch cable too.

Spring hangers, front chassis... They can be rot boxes, esp if it's been resprayed to hide the dreaded tin rot. Gl

Rust, rust and rust.

Also listen for knocking from the cam on the engine.

Best way to improve motorway driving is to fit a 4.63 back axle (if it doesn't already have one), you can further improve it by fitting an Overdrive gearbox or 5sp.

Type 9's can be weak.

If fitting an MT75 you have to cut a new hole in the floor for the gear lever.

Or do what I do, accept it for what it is and drive and enjoy it!

I will :-) Except maybe for a 2.0 swap that can make pulling my caravan possible.

You might be surprised how well the 1600 performs in the SWB, I can't remember them ever seeming to be struggling for power even when loaded up.
