Alternator failed anything i can check?

Postby walt1984 » Sun Aug 28, 2016 11:46 am

Away for the weekend in the camper and noticed no charge warning light after driving from Scarborough to whitby.
Battery voltage with engine running is 12. 5 volts.
Anything i can check or look for or is it knackered?

Started charging at 13volts then gave up. Cover on back is black with soot and smells like something has burn out.
Any members local that could help us with a part, asked all over, been looking for a Marnie engineer to see if they have owt but its a bank holiday .

the brushes have probably worn out or the bearings have run dry and burnt out
They are both very easy to replace . There is probably dozens of similar Fords that use the same brushes. Might be worth putting the alternator part number into google to see what other vehicles used that alternator and then visit a local scrappy

If you strip it , clean the commutators with some wet n dry and clean between each copper strip with a matchstick or similar . Fit new brushes
and grease the bearings too with hi temp grease .

A new Alternator isn't very expensive, only £60 or so.

Im 90mile from home. New higher out put alternator is about £60 delivered next week.
Been asking around and there are no scrap yards near whitby, been shut down by environment agency.
Rang a few motorist discounts in Scarborough, only one answered phone and they didnt stock a single alternator.
Ive got breakdown cover and i think i can limp home if i drive in day light.

Have you got a leisure battery you could run the engine from to get you home if the main goes flat?

Got it home. Phew.
From when i realised it had packed up i had to start it 4 times.
Yeah dodge the leisure battery was still good (showing a green light on panel) drove 95miles home with radio off and held off as long as i dare before i switched side lights on.
New split charge wiring must of kept us with power from leisure battery. Panel is now red and it wont turn over but its home.
