IFS conversions are ruining good mk2's

Postby YellaVan » Sun Oct 23, 2016 7:11 pm

I think a lot of clean mk2's are being damaged with independent suspension conversions. Engine conversions aren't too bad because there easily changed back. That's the plan for my mk2 to keep the 1.6 pinto to be used again when i stop using it as a daily driver.
Hope the new transits come with a welder

the ifs conversion could be returned back too - just think how many rusty inner arches get repaired over the years - other than that you dont alter much else

the ifs makes it a much better van to use especially when the steering box is worn

to me it doesn't matter what you do to a classic so long as you look after it - my van i've had over 15 years and its in as good a condition now as its ever been it could have been standard and not looked after and be a right mess by now

i dont particularly think ive done anything to help increase the value of my van (by modding it) but i don't care as i want to build what i consider my ultimate vehicle and ive no intention of selling it - and if i did sell it the fact that ive kept it in good condition will have helped it's value :D

I just want an idea of peoples opinions on this conversion. I dont think it should be done to vans that are mint though.

Fair enough if there plated every where else it makes no odds. :D :D

well i've done it to mine and it's pritty mint

just depends on the use you have for it - i wanted a modified van and a mint one at that  i have done a lot of welding to it but its not bodged over plates etc.its all neatly done

i considered it on my firevan too but went for a pas box instead - i just wont be going as fast so it's not as necessary,(and its much less work) i fitted the ifs mainly due to the cossy engine it had :D

Taking the work you've just done on your van as an example yella, would it have made that much difference if you'd had to undo an IFS conversion while you were restoring it? I wouldn't have thought so.

don't forget to tell your insurance when you've modified it along with an engineers report or if you have to claim they wont pay

I've always declared mods when insuring cars in the past and they've never asked for an engineers report. On the other hand I've tried getting a V5 amended to reflect an engine change (fiesta 950cc to 2000cc) and it was such a ball ache that I gave up!

some insurance companys don't ask for a report ,,, just declare it is enough ,,, a letter from your local garage to dvla with the v5 confirming the engine change usually does it

how does a modification that inproves a vehicle ruin it, especially if you cant see the modification! no one would even know it had ifs if you diddnt tell them.....you would have hated the 70s custom scene :P

the 65 mk1 has been modified during its restoration with a mk2 roof, because at the time thats all they could find...does that de value it or make it less of a nice van, id say probably not
