yes it seems mk1 transit and cheap don't go together, this is why i asked if i could put a mk1 front on a mk2, as the mk2 doesn't seem to have got to dear yet, and the only real difference is the front end, i am even looking to south africa and oz, to see whats about, i have my own business shipping classics from south africa and america, but it wouldn't be a problem to get one from oz, but even out there i can't find anything, even though this would make it more money, i would get a rust free one for not much money.

I have been keeping an eye on the Oz websites for Transits over the last couple of years, I have bought 2x Mk2 Sundowners this way. Problem is, a lot of the Mk1 vans from there are 6 cylinder models (diesel front) and many of these were sliding door models. I have only seen very early ones (pre 73) that were flat front, and most of these are rotten, or well on their way. Nearly all of the Mk2's sold there were 6 cylinder models too, except the last (phase 2) which were imported fully built up for Oz Post, but again these were sliding door models. You might occasionally come across one that has lived in a desert part of Oz, with very little rust. But they are not exactly thick on the ground there either.
I think you are looking at it the right way though, a very tidy Mk2 should be cheaper to find than a tidy Mk1, even taking into account converting the steering and panels over.

ideally what i need is an unfinished project of some kind, campers can have new panels put in to make them back into vans, i will find something one day, i'm back in the uk in a month, and will find something while i'm about, i don't care if i have to hook the trailer on and drive to norway, or the south of france, there is one in italy at the moment, for 1495 euros, and a tidy white one in germany for 2495 euros, but i was hoping to find one under £1000 as all i need is the shell

well if you buy the one in Italy and strip it down to the shell and then list all the parts they should make 500 quid back

the only down side with both the ones in europe is the side door on the wrong side, and the fact they both have side door, i guess it could be removed or find someone breaking a twin side door lwb and get my friend fit side door the other side, give twin side door ( not easy ), great for showing off engine in the back at shows, side door wouldn't stop me getting it though if i decided to go get it

unusual to have side door on drivers side, i know they can be either side or both, i must admit i like both sides like the german fire vans, but not so easy to find that on the swb vans,

i saw that, how easy is it to fill the windows in, seem to be a few mini busses around, but very few vans, just out of interest, anyone know how much a swb van weighs, can't be much more than 1500kg can it, thats about the limit for my trailer behind my car, my car will tow 2100kg, plus i guess the 5% over they normally let u get away with,

Would of thought its easier to fill flat panels left by glass than put in/take out side doors, also wouldn't the internal double skinning on a minibus make the shell more rigid, better for your intended application?

never thought of the mini bus being slightly stronger shell, they are generally cleaner as well, better looked after,

The SWB vans are around 1200-1300 kgs, depending on variant, so you are well in with your trailer.
