Postby Johny89 » Sun Dec 25, 2016 1:15 pm

hello,
i just bought a Ford Transit MK1 camper 1976

Anyone has any idea what diesel engine it is? Reason I ask is because it has a 5speed transmission and I'm not sure the engine is original.
Btw has it got timing gears/belt or chain?
I want to be sure to get the right parts for the engine.

Also, where does one find parts for it like brake parts engine parts etc (i'm from Belgium)

thanks in advance ;)

I have most parts you might need, it looks like a York engine to me.

Ok thans nog I know its a York diesel I want to know what I can do: can I put a neer diesel in it (non ecu if possible) and keep the rest of the van as it is or do they need lots of work to make one fit. Reason I ask is because the engine now had a terrible cold start and smells/smoke way too much for a camper van. Any write ups on the concersions are welkome as well.

Btw anywhere I can buy workshop manuals?

@Ralph how about shipping to Belgium can you?

You say it has a 5 speed transmission. Is it a type 9 or an mt75. Mt75 has gear stick in the middle of the cab. Type 9 has gearstick nearer the driver (as your van is LHD).

I would avoid using a type 9 with a diesel as it does not like low revs. and if you are changing the engine but staying with diesel, then it might be sensible to ensure you have the MT75 transmission.

same! Is that where the gears actually are, or has someone just screwed on a knob off a BMW?? Looks like a Getrag pattern....

Its where the gears actualy are. They are rally short: till fifth gear I have to go almost ever 10km/h up (6m/h) and in fifth it does about 80km/h... it goes a tad higher downhill But screams alot then... But it had not much power anyway.

The gear ratio problem would seem to be more to do with the rear diff ratio. Which axle is it ?

And apart from the Getrag, the other gearbox that had a dog leg gear pattern like that was the 5 speed ZF fitted to late Bedford CF/Opel Blitz. The Bellhousing to a York for either would need to be a custom job though. And how would you get the gear change on the side like the original 4 speed or type 9 which it would seem to be.

Photos of gearbox from under the van would be useful.

That is interesting. There was an option for the Ford A series of a ZF S5 24/3 box and since one of the engines for the A series was a 2.4 York diesel then it seems that your Transit has recieved the engine from a Ford A series.

I would guess that the combination is rare as there were not many A series produced and the ZF box was an option so not standard.

The ZF S5 24 gearbox is very strong (it was also fitted to the V8 Aston Martin) so I would definitely keep it. So I would fit the updated diesel and change the ratio in the back axle. The ZF plate shows that 5th gear is 1.0 ratio ie direct drive so from your 80kph at max revs then it seems that you have a 5.8 ratio in the back axle. If it is a twin wheel axle then the best you can do is a 4.6 ratio but it will help a lot.

You have good Google skills :) I couldn't find this info... Its great info thanks.
It has a single wheel rear axle.
From what year did they start using ecu on the DI engines. Don't want to go through all the hastlle to make an ecu work and even find one together with its ecu...
Happy newyear
