differential carrier/assembly oil leak MK1 115

Postby grub3r » Mon Jan 02, 2017 8:57 pm

Hi,

Im getting leaks from differential carrier(assembly) and am wondering how you I would go about replacing oil and fixing the leaks.

this is MK1 1977 115 model.

First I thought I just unscrew the bolt and remove the cover but when looking it seems that I need to dismantle a lot of parts(propeller shaft, axle shafts) to come to the cover.
Is that really so difficult to remove cover on this type?

When I now examine the pictures it seems that leakage is where the shaft is connected to the assembly, or am I really on wrong thoughts here?
if so, there should be an oil-seal which may be leaking?

sorry for my bad english and please advice on how to best approach this difficulty.

I'm not dure but my guess is that if you taken of the ujoint you might be able to taken of the plate where the ujoint bolts to and then pry out the seal and put in a another. Won't Hurt taken the ujoint off to have a look.

Hi all,

after having look at the motomobil Im now really puzzled about which seal I would need to buy.
It says german diff with cover, english...

As I understand there is no cover on this diff, meaning this is an english one?

Hi good people.

I have now decided to change the oil seal from diff to U-joint.

I ve undone the Ujoint and removed the the nut holding the drive flange
removed the drive flange(it actually just fell off the pinion), didnt need to pull..

wanting to remove the old oil seal but it looks like it is not removable from this side? It looks like its closed from this end.
I can see rubber-seal and some of the sealspring between the housing and the pinion pointing towards the end..
Do I have to remove the differential assembly to access the inside of it to remove the seal?

That means removeing axle shafts and all that which come with it..
Do I really need to take apart half the car to change an oilseal... :(

Please advice on this guys

Did you ever solve this? You are correct, the half shafts need removing to be able to remove the diff assembly. There is a crush tube (collapsible spacer, no 6 a the diagram) that needs replacing, the diff flange tightens up against it on reassembly.
