non return valve in mechanical fuel pump?

Postby Ellwood » Sun Jan 15, 2017 4:11 pm

lately my old MK1 hasnt been starting too good, after mounting a new engine.(which seemed to have an electric pump once opon a time- as the fuel pump mounting hole was blanked off) anyway i put on my mechanical pump from the old engine.

there seems to be 2 problems of not getting fuel into the carb

- i found a tiny filter inside the float valve, which was blocked, and now cleaned

but still not getting fuel- the glass sight glass on the fuel pump is empty after she has stood a few weeks, which seems to indicate the fuel is running back down into the tank???

so is there a non return valve inside the mechanical fuel pump? if so , maybe mines leaking .
if not then maybe i should put one in the fuel line, or mount an electric ticker pump? or put a primer electric pump on???

There isn't a non return valve in the pump, you need to fit one in the fuel line to stop it running back.

Both valves in the mechanical pump only operate one way (ie) they are non return valves. If the pump empites they are faulty and/or you have a leak in the diaphram or fuel lines.

i think i cured it by hanging the fuel pipe over the radiator pipe, instead of under it.

another question is regarding the air screw in the carb- if the throttle butterfly is fully closed, will adjusting the airscrew be enough for tickover on a normal tranny? i found on mine i had to open the butterfly a tad, so left the airscrew at 1.5 turns

i finally found the fuel problem today, and i was very lucky that she made it to and from the mot station on friday, where she went through the mot by the way.

problem was fuel starvation due to the rubber pipe coming up from the fuel tank into the fuel line - the rubber pipe had rotted so badly that it had fallen off the steel fuel line, just above the the fuel tank. so i got no fuel in the final stage. only found it by putting in an electric pump in the engine bay and discovering there was no fuel coming up.

now i dare drive her more than 5 miles at a time.
