1973 mk1 transit

Postby Matty23 » Tue Mar 07, 2017 2:45 pm

Looking for some advice, I took on a mk1 transit to do up for a customer which had sat for 20yrs. All brakes and chassis work is done I'm just struggling with getting the v4 engine running right. I have changed plugs/ leads/ dizzycap/ rotar arm/ condenser/ points /fuel pump changed oil and filters renewed fuel pipes and cleaned the tank also set valves and cleaned carb. The problem is it will start with choke out and run but rough and feels a bit missy and pops on pressing throttle the carb is zenith. Any ideas what to try next or tips on fine tuning these thanks

Is it worth putting a webber carb on rather than the zenith?

Poss play with adv/retard on distributor and maybe richen mixture a tad,if it hasn't been run in 20 years or so wouldn't it be set still for leaded petrol, but now have unleaded in it?

Yeah iv tried adv and retard but should really set it with strobe if it's possible with these engines? I'm only 30 and been a hgv/ plant mechanic not had much experience with old petrol engines.

Fella that owns it had put lead balls in the tank, also someone today told me to set the points with dwell metre rather than using feeler gauges. I set points to what manual said can't remember off top of my head what they were

From ford workshop manual,2.0 Essex, spark plug gap 0.6+\-0.1,static advance(initial)6deg BTDC,points gap 0.64,dwell angle 40deg +\_2deg,don't know if any of that will help manual I've gots for German one,so only has limited info for Essex V4.
Looking through it though does show that crank will turn clockwise from front of van and has a mark for TDC on crankwheel and case, but you've probably already got that far.

Yes commonly done
I did recently come across the strobe I used on my 1970s mk1 back in the seventies ( my avatar van) but dont ask me how now, its 37 years since I last used it!!

Sorry for my ignorance but how do you tell difference with 1.7/ 2.0 Essex or cologne. And thanks for info so far no one I speak to have had anything to do with the v4 engine.

Have you checked for air leaks?

Spray WD40 around the intake and carb, if the idle speeds up you have an air leak somewhere.

If not worn carb, any play in the spindle? Did you fit a rebuild kit or just clean it out? Could be a dodgy accelerator pump.

I'm going to set points and distributed timing first chance I get, probably next week now the way work has come in. If no change think I'm be changing carb because bloke who owns it has mountains of spares and I'm sure there will be one among it.

I find the V4 isnt that fussy about ignition timing .It sounds like its running weak so air leaks and/or bunged up jets in the carb are worth checking. The lead balls in the tank made me smile,it makes you wonder what else has been played about with.
