Help Mark 1 with Mark 2 Disc Brakes Bent Stub Axle ID

Postby stooy » Sun May 07, 2017 3:35 am

G'day Guys,

I have a bit of a problem with my Mk 1 I am hoping you can help with.

It has a Mk2 Disc Brake front end installed.

I found that I have a bent left front stub axle.

No worries, I got another front end from the wreckers, but today when I went to install it, the "new" stub axle is different, to the one I need to replace.

Can you guys help me ID the one that I have in place, and perhaps suggest where I might be able to get one, because our local transit wreckers closed down and I have no where else to get one.

Many Thanks

Stewart

I'm pretty sure it'll still fit. Many many years ago my dad ruined his stub axle when his wheel bearing went on his mk2. We went to a breakers and similar happened the part he bought was different, but it still fitted all ok.

Yours may have come off a twin wheel van or the 100 with the six stud wheel fitting yours looks heavy duty the bearing ring on the hub looks bigger.at the time we had two small a series pickups at work they had drums on the front so don't no if they are off a a series

The original mk1 stub axle was the same for drum and disc set ups. For disc brakes, it had a separate caliper carrier adapter which mounted to the 4 bolts - and the disc shield mounted on these same bolts. It looks like that is what you have fitted - is it a separate part ?

While I don't have the info on the other stub axle, it looks to me as if the caliper carrier an integral part of the stub axle casting which would make the 3 screws simply there to hold on the disc shield. The disc shield may be different or may just need different holes drilling to make it fit. Or just do without the shield.

If that all makes sense, then the only thing that I would worry about is if the caliper mounting face is in the right place for the disc ie the same offset and that the seal is the same dia at the base of the stub axle.

Hope that helps

Thanks Everyone.

Doug seems to be on the money, the bracket on the top one is separate.

I have my old drum brake axle in the shed, I will take a look at it and maybe steal a stub axle off it.

You may find that the kingpin size is different at work at the time we had the proper Ford tool for machining the bushes on the mk1 when we came to do the mk2 it was to small
