HELP! Head gasket gone! mk2 1986 engine replacement

Postby Hazel » Tue May 23, 2017 6:54 pm

Hi all,
I've recently bought a MK2 transit engine 1993cc, she's an ex horse box but has very little power,. I've also just discovered that her head gasket has gone. Yeah its not been the best of days! I really could do with upgrading engine to get more power as she's now a camper with a woodburner, Belfast sink and calories gas bottle so its a lot of weight! I'm trying a bottle of that steel seal gadget repair in the morning just to hopefully tide me over for 2 weeks although I'm not filled with hope! Has anyone managed to fit a 2.3 into theirs??? Also, has anyone had any luck with the green slime gadget temp fix??

The standard pinto has the bonus of being very difficult to destroy as well as being very simple and cheap to work on, it's not going to be fast or economical. I would fix what you have.

Nowt wrong with a Pinto (engine not horse) when in good shape, whats wrong with gasket, water loss or compression down?

The radiator is spilling brown water when we stop anywhere. It did it a couple of times the other day then she settled down and the temp remained low for the next 4 hours of driving. The mechanic put a device on the radiator and said if it turns the liquid yellow it means that the head gasket has gone. It turned yellow, he took the device off then the radiator started spitting out brown water and bubbling up. Has anyone had any success with Steel Seal Head gasket fluid?

Just had a look and to be honest the gasket sets haven't gone up in the 20 odd years since I worked on a "pinto"

Seem to remember earlier engines had spline head bolts and later used torx.

Heads were unlikley to warp (reface either yourself or get an engineering place to do it for a few quid)

Non intereferance engine is a God send :D

Did you check your replies in the other forum? Some good points on there.

As a guide for parts prices I had my head skimmed, converted to run on unleaded, fitted new valves and a new hi torque cam + followers and new gaskets for about £300 maybe £350, then there would be labour on top of that.

Someone who knows pinto engines should be able to have the head off, cleaned up and back on in about 6 hours.
If it needs no other work then a full top end gasket set is about £20.

Whereabouts in the world are you, there's probably someone on here who would be able to recommend a mechanic close to you.

An update:

The pinto head gasket had completely gone. She now has a 2.5L diesel banana engine and 5 speed gearbox and is oh so much better! Thanks for all the advice :)
