Wheel Question(twin wheels)

Postby bulls in transit » Tue Jun 27, 2017 1:43 pm

Started prepping wheels for re painting on my van, using a wire brush on drill they come up like picture, questions really does anybody know what's the finish on a sandblasted bare wheel,if it wasn't for swirl marks left by drill think I'd just be putting clear lacquer on them instead of paint.Image

That looks good, a shame to paint over all that hard work.

Thanks,Real life there a bit 10 m specials still, going to try scotch pads and compound to see if swirls come out tomorrow,if I can get a uniform good finish don't think laquering them will leave them too far off of satin stainless/chrome,which I think is a look worth going for.
Just thinking could I achieve the same/better result getting them sandblasted, just don't know what finish blasting would leave them?

I imagine like a dull metal. I'm no expert but I do watch a sh*t load of car programmes and I think it depends on the coarseness of the material you use.

blasting leaves them with a satin finish, and quite rough on the surface, gives the paint something really good to adhere to though. Not something you would lacquer over though! Just about to get a couple done for my van. If you like the shiny finish you could try getting them "shadow chrome" paint finish - it is a paint process used on some modern car wheels, and looks like chrome, but darker, if that makes sense?

There is also a new process that I have seen on TV that looks exactly like chrome, but is applied with paint guns and a hose! . It is not exactly paint, more of a chemical application/reaction, and looks great. Not sure how it would hold up with brake duct/heat, and whether anyone does it in the UK?

Or if you like shiny, just buy a set of Euroliner stainless covers, they look quite good IMO.

Thats just what my thoughts were telling me to search for!,just come off of search for this type thing and the chrome paint thing Conrad mentioned, should of said up top but I'm in northern Spain, there's none locally, nearest ally wheel refurb place is 50 km and my Gallego's not up to a phone call..
Gonna try to see if I can get finish I want long way(diy),metal polishing kit of fleabays around a score delivered here, little to pay if it works out,not a lot to loose if it doesn't,it looked ok with black wheels and S/S beauty rings

you can polish steel up to a near chrome finish. It is protecting it against rust that is the tricky part! Let me know how you get on, I am curious about this. :)
