Carburettor Drain Leak

Postby Jimbbobw1977 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 7:04 pm

The van had its first proper run out this weekend with no major issues covered a couple of hundred miles.
Two points I'm looking for advice on -

1) Squeaking - when it has been driven for a long period it starts to squeak from the wheels at low speeds only. If I slightly apply the hand brake it goes.

2) The carburettor drain is leaking when it's turned off. The van smells like its runny slightly rich and the idle is lumpy to which I have to turn the idle screw up slightly. After turning off its drip......drip..... for a bit through the tube that runs from the carb by the battery on to the floor. I'm guessing this is to do with the carb bowl??

Thanks

1. Do you think that it is brake squeal? In which case if strip the rear drums and clean them up, if they are dry and not contaminated etc you can gently rough up the shoes and drums with fine sand paper which should cure the squeak.

2. typically the float stocking or maladjusted causes overflow, you'll need to remove the carb and strip the float bowl and measure the float height and operation of the plunger.

Above is generally as I'm not familiar at all with mk1/2 carbs. :(

Thanks for the reply. I know the rear brakes where rebuilt in 2015 as they were binding. It does some brake related as it goes when you break and only seems to happen when they have warmed through for s bit.

I was thinking it could be the float reading up, but I wasn't to sure I'm only used to fiddling with the carb on my 1988 Tecumseh lawn mower engine

Need to enlist the help of s specialist mechanic I think...

I am presuming this is a Mk2 with a Pinto engine? The plastic pipe you refer to is a breather vent on the float chamber, if fuel is coming out of it then you have too much fuel in the chamber. Could be the float valve letting by or the float level is too high. Some of the later V4's had a similar ser up on the Ford carburettor if its a Mk1.
