Temperature gauge problem

Postby conrod » Fri Sep 08, 2017 12:51 pm

I have a problem with the temperature gauge on my 1986 Mk2 (phase 2) basically, it does not work, and never has! If I ground the wire out at the engine then the gauge will read maximum. This suggests the gauge and voltage stabiliser is okay.
Can anyone please tell me what the correct colour temp sender unit is for this van?

No Neil, van was originally 2.0 Pinto. I suspect the wrong colour sender unit has been fitted. I cant find any info as to which colour is correct for this year van. I think it is different to the phase 1 Mk2.

Burtons list a white one as "Early" SOHC and a green one for other SOHC but also to fit engines of a later period ie DOHC, Cologne 2.9 etc.

So there was definitely a changover at some point. No idea what the spec is of each.

thanks Doug!

I posted this problem on the Mk1/mk2 forum as well, and Fred tells me her Transit (which is identical to mine, or at least it was when new!) has a white band sensor in it, so that would appear to be the one I need. I will get one from Burton and give that go!

I did some more scouting around and from Capri forum it looks like white band is as follows:

Ambient room temp(30c) resistance=250ohm. Hot(80c) resistance=~50ohm

So if you can find a 50ish ohm resistor, then you might be able to see if it puts the guage in the right place for normal temp.

yes there is, seems to deliver a consistent 5V supply to the gauge. Fuel gauge works okay too.

those resistance values are helpful, thanks! I could probably mess with putting an inline resistor in, to get the needle in the right place, but the curve is probably different on the sender, so gauge may not get full sweep.

I had similar issue with the mk 1 fuel gauge I had a ford tank sender going to the rover v8 dash gauge it would always play up the spark said it was the ohms causing it so I fit a universal gauge which has cured it

I think the sender in mine may originally have been white. I can report pink and black senders didn't work for me

Cheers guys, tried putting inline resistors to sender wire in line with the values that Doug reported, and gauge seemed to work okay, if not a bit low reading. Have ordered a new sender from Burtons and will report back once it arrives!

The white band temperature sender finally arrived from Burtons today. I fitted it, and hey presto, for the first time since owning the van (over 2 years) I have a temperature gauge that works properly! Thanks all for your help and suggestions :)
