Wheel it fit?

Postby cristoffmk2 » Fri Mar 09, 2018 11:45 am

I've scoured the forum but can't quite find the answer to my question...

What's the largest wheel/tyre size (or overall diameter) that I can fit to my Mk2 minibus? its a 1982 SWB single wheel 5-stud. It wont be massively loaded but it would be nice to be able to steer at full lock and go over a sleeping (or awake) policeman without rubbing the arches.

To explain a bit more (and please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree)... I'm after driving the old dear all the way to Italy and back and it would be nice to slightly improve the cruising speed/ lower the revs a tiny bit. So bigger wheels seems like a simple solution. She luckily already has the 4.63 dif, so I guess the only other option would be changing the 4 speed box for a 5. However I'm very reluctant to change becuase she's in very good condition mechanically so I don't want to gamble or change her too much.

I've already bought some 16" (7inch wide) landrover modulars, they'll need re-drilling and powder coating and everything, want to check I'm on to the right idea before having all that done.

All advice much appreciated.

Cheers!

You can fit 205/80/14 c tyres to your standard rims, 215/75/16 tyres will go on your wellers with no problems :)

There are taller ratios for the single wheel axle available. 4.11 would be a good upgrade, or a 5 speed conversion, type 9 box from a early Mk3 is probably the easiest to do. Taller tyres would typically gain less than 10% in cruising speed. Swapped in a 3.5 into a SWB recently, it was made by fitting a Mk3 Zephyr CWP into a Transit diff head. Worked well! Gives about 2800 rpm @100 kph in 4th gear.
P.S. Just spotted this after posting, just what you need!

Thanks a lot gents!

I think I will start with the tyre and wheel combo and see how that works out before I start switching the diffs about. It's just that I'm not a confident/competent/equipped mechanic.

I'll post up how it goes and what difference it makes.

Oh and Mutley, that tyre size for the 16"s, is that going to work front and back?

Sounds too good to be true!

As long as you get the correct ET on the Landy wheels, I find the ones that fit series Landrovers fit best.
