Need help on smoking york

Postby Johny89 » Mon Jun 18, 2018 5:25 am

So I have this huge cloud of smoke when I start my 76 york engine.
It doesn't matter if the engine is cold or hot. It smells like pure diesel and since its a camper im afraid to be kicked of some camping spots because of it.
Had been looking to put a more recent engine in but I can't by law restriction in Belgium. So I want to make my york as best as it can but want to deal with smoke first.
Fuel pump timing is spot on (changed timing belt last month)
I want to narrow down the problem so I don't have to throw parts at it.
Btw engine is very loud like I never heard any diesel this loud before.

Was it ok before you did the belt on some of the pumps they are marked up as 12 degrees advance but in the ford workshop manual it’s 13 degrees but if you sure timeing is right maybe time for injectors to be overhauled.
Yours been a 76 it maybe on the single heater plug in the top of the manifold that has a fuel feed to it may not be burning all the desal .if yours has the later type head with 4heater plugs in the head it may have some burnt out also if yours has the inline minimeec pump with the overload button in the middle of the stop lever spindle it may have stuck in giving extra fuel at start up some of the vans we had a selaniod on the pump to operate the overload from a sensor on the head Hope this helps that’s all I can think of as it’s such a long time since I’ve seen a York engine they are a engine that was never a good starter ford had to bring out the di to get a good starting engine

It was the same before the belt change. I don't know what pump it has but the extra fuel knob come back out.
Can injectors be overhauled or do I need new?

Yes injectors can be overhauled by diesel specialist if you have a pull knob in dash to stop engine it maybe the minimeck pump also if your pre heater is manual it maybe the older type with switch on the they allways seem to smoke more on start up if it is the later type it will have 4 heater plugs 3 inside the inlet manifold and one outside and will be automatically switch on by the control unit operated by a sender on the cylinderhead

Preheater is manual in intake.
It has a pull knob with cable to stop the engine. Problem is it smokes even when it has just been driven and you startup after a min or 2.
I tried pulling the stop knob but still smokes bad.

Tried injector cleaner before. Didn't do anything.
Found out the oil is very runny so I gues it has at least on injector leaking. I will remove all injectors this weekend. Found a shop to rebuild them.
Will let you know how it does after it.

So I got my injectors rebuild.
Smoking problem is partially solved.
One time it smokes the other time it doesn't.

New problem occured however ( just before I changed injectors) when fuel level is around 1/4 guage, it starts to "stall" every now and then. Then I add 20l ( tank holds aprox 40) and no stall anymore .
