DI DIESEL PROBLEMS

Postby redeemer » Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:02 pm

Hi I have a mk2 transit with a di engine (vacuum pump conected behind alternator) and since when i have bought it, during driving the engine sometimes keeps reving on its own. I went to a diesel expert and told me that there is some blokage near the tank. I checked this but there easn any and i changed the pipe. I also removed an electric pump which was not functioning. After all this the engine still keeps reving, rough drivability and excessive vibrations when changing gears and not reving that much . Can any transit expert from here help me out about this problem?? From what i have read there are many profesional people here about transits. :)

Yes with a full tank it almost runs smooth with very few reving. And it doesn't have a filter in the tank , the only filter is the one under the lift pump and it new.thanks luke!

mine does this a bit too. It never does it with the second tank I fitted. I suppose I should take the fuel tank off and check for a sock filter, is this a massive pain in the arse?

It does it most when facing downhill with a low tank (the revving that is). Also I get what can only be a tank-related fuel starvation problem (as if I'm intermittently lifting me foot off the gas) when caning it up a steep hill, cos it doesn't happen on the second tank.

Perhaps I should move the main tank onto the roof-rack!

I had something simular on a Di, revving at speed causing a huge cloud of smoke. At one point I obliterated the Place De La Concorde in Paris. It was some oil union that was allowing oil into the bore, which the engine was burning causing it to rev (and the smoke).

The electric pump was fitted before the diesel enters in the lift pump and I think it was there in order to help the mechanical pump bringing diesel from the tank. But when I tested it it wasn functionong so I removed it. And I have the cartridge filter (the one that fits right under the lift pump mounting and which is tighten by a fly nut )

No but my DI doesn't smoke when reving. Its just revves while changing gears and while in free. The engine has incredible strenght tough of this problem. Cant it be the injection pump faulty??

Could be, but usually when diesel pumps leak they let in air and run badly, not rev high.

Here's my theory...

The Vehicle in question was petrol originaly, whoever swapped the engine did not use the diesel tank to go with it, so they used an electric pump to help with fuel flow on hills etc... remedy...fit a diesel tank :D

That is only a theory of course..

but what is the difference between a petrol tank and a diesel tank?
When i removed the tank, if Im not mistaken the inside of the tank is devided in compartments.
And also dont forget that when I change gears especialy from 3rd to 4th and dont rev the engine that much before presing the clutch, the whole van becomes like a sanding vibrator because there will be execisive vibration.
