leaky fuel pump 2.5di

Postby chrisvmax » Mon Apr 14, 2008 1:00 pm

Hi, the fuel pump on my amby has been dripping diesel for a while but seems to be getting progressively worse. It's a Lucas pump (I think)
It appears to be leaking from the left as you look at the front of the van where there is a 'push-on' connecting rod type thingy.
Any advice as to whether I should try and get it repaired (I've been told at least £130) or whether I should look for a second hand one is most welcome.

Regards,
Chris

I have the same problem
Does it drip from the engine side and spills all that side of the engine?
I think, because I rechanged the injection pump that there is a small round seal that seals that conecting rod which have a small piston attached to it.

Is this your pump with that blue cap there?

My opinion is to take it take it to a diesel specialist and I think the problem could be solved by changin a seal, dont spend that money I think it shouldnt cost that
I should also take my van to somone because cant solve the problem that I have on my own, apart from this diesel dripping , when the engine is cold and gives the throttle to change gears , and leaves the throttle in a sudden the engine will keep decreasing its rpm until it stops. When the engine warms this problem disapper

Yes I think that's it. It appears to be leaking leaking from here.

Is it worth looking for a second hand pump?

Lucas pumps are all the same, so another would be a swap, and they are generally reliable so I would go for a 2nd hand one.

Is that the case? I was told by the diesel garage that they had to be set up specially for individual engines and so a straight swap was likely not to work.

Hope you're right Fred. Any idea how much a second hand one would cost?

Anyone got a spare?? :D

You would need to get it timed up, but then that's the same with any replacement pump.

In my opinion you should only change that part only ,where the conecting rod is conected. If you view by a mirror the under side of the pump there are two bolts, if you remove them and with a bit patience because they are in an akward place! you can change that part only from a second pump or try to find the seals! Thats my opinion because I have changed the whole pump and its not an easy task since you need to advance or retard the timing even though I kept the same timing positions :!:
