MK1 Fibreglass Bonnet

Postby welshrussell » Sat Jan 24, 2009 6:55 pm

I thought I would start this thread to help people out :D

After searching for quite some time for a satisfactory bonnet I have come to the conclusion that I may be in for a long wait :(

So I've bit the bullet and just ordered a new fibreglass one from a company called Smith & Deakin.

I have never seen one or could get much info about these, so have bought it in good faith that after painting you won't tell the difference :D

So I will post some photos when it arrives and give the people out there a chance to see what it looks like before they part with a £137.50.

The final straw came this week when a second hand bonnet on ebay I was watching went for £122, the problem was there was only one photo and barely a description with it :(

I hope the bonnet was worth that :?:

Also I'm getting the van resprayed, so it works out cheaper to buy this bonnet than have the old one cleaned up and fixed for the paint job

Hopefully someone will find the thread useful if like me they have never seen a fibreglass panel before

Will post pics as soon as it arrives - watch this space 8)

I am on my third metal bonnet and just got sick of constantly patching the things up and watching the rot keep coming through, so hopefully no more of these problems :D

Smith & Deakin are making this to order so they said it would take around a week, so hopefully by the middle of next week I should be getting a large flat parcel at my door 8)

Talking of bonnets... should there be some sort of rubber seal along the trailing edge of the bonnet on a MK1 petrol front to stop water from dribbling through and forming a puddle on the top of my air filter housing?

yes chris , at the back of your bonnet should be a rubber strip
you can just make it out on the bottom of the bonnet in this photo, this is what happens to the airfilters the water runs in and rots them out! :(
