hi, can an overdrive unit from a mk2 4 speed g/box fit a mk1 gearbox?

you need to use the mk2 gearbox

yeah you need the whole gearbox really as there is a bit machined onto the mainshaft to drive the oil pump of the overdrive unit..

good convertion thogh,I love my overdrive gearbox in the mk2, especailly with the york motor as it gives me some more rations to get it going and keep it moving

There is a firm in the Uk that manufactures a 'universal' overdrive.The prop is cut and the unit inserted in it somehow.
An internet search using google might find them,I can't recall any other details.

what engine is in your van?? if its the original v4 then you could use the mk2 overdrive box,s overdrive and mainshaft to convert yours, the input shafts are 2 different lenghts short= v4 17/2.0 and long =ohc/v6/york 2.4/ 2.5d
also the gearsets are different in size and ratio but they will all fit on either overdrive or normal mainshaft, ive rebuilt many of these gearboxes.
