Hi again,
Further to my last posts, here is the latest news.

The gauze filter on the injector pump was cleaned... not too bad apparently. They fitted a faucet electric pump, took it out for a run and it still dies.

From your previous posts, it appears that the lift pump is knackered.

What do you want us to do? The diesel man said. "It now becomes expensive, if we have to remove the injector pump".

They are not qualified to service the pump, themselves.

I said that I would get some advice, so here I am.

What I would like to know is, should I chance a second-hand pump from a breaker, or try to get the old old one refurbished? Also is there any drawings of the innards of these things?

Thanks for your time,
Caulky.

Thanks very much gemini. Now I know why they said they would send it away to be serviced.

Not exactly the sort of thing, you can buy a few bits for and repair.
Setting the thing up afterwards, needs experience and special equipment.

i would take it to a diesel injection specialist before you spend any money with the garage, let them test it, ive a feeling you are going to get stung

If you were nearer to me, I could recommend a specialist. We had a new lift pump, timed up the Lucas CAV pump, sorted out the various leaks and new filter, a couple of years ago now. It came to £300, but the van then flew and still pulls like a trian! Money well spent!

thats a useful looking file, i'll grab that too thanks.

as for making a decision on this you need to get some definite figures from him before you can make a choice, you may find that it cocts twice as much or more for them to fix it, at which poiint it is probably worth trying a second hand unit, see if someone here that breaks transits has one, i think you will be treated better than chancing it at your local breakers.

btw, you said they fitted the electric pump and it still died, but you also said this ... "From your previous posts, it appears that the lift pump is knackered." ..... so if it still has the same problem as before then the lift pump isnt knackered ..... i would change the lift pump just to get it out of the equation (they are not that expensive) .... and are they sure that the electric pump could supply the flow rate required ?

please post a few more details, you say its dying, on tickover, while the revs are high, while driving, how long from starting, do you have to bleed it before it will start again??
only way it can stop providing its getting fuel is cut the diesel or draw in air

OK, this is the unabridged story.
The original 2.4 York engine was replaced with this 2.5di engine. While renovating the van last year, and turning her over regularly, I noticed that if I revved it hard (stationary) sometimes after taking my boot off, it would stop.
Last November, I took it to a garage, who said they would investigate the problem. They found a cracked plastic fuel pipe, within a connector.

I got rather angry after Christmas, and further work was done (headlight alignment, etc).
Later, they said it wouldn`t start. By now I was fuming. They tried jump-starting, tow and bump, all to no avail.

I said, "I`ll get the bloody thing started". Bought a new battery, put some fuel in it, and with the help of a mechanic (he filled the filter compartment with diesel and primed it), it started.

Yippee I thought!

They said they would take it out for a test run. Intermittant engine failure, especially on hills. It`s the same as running out of fuel, no problem re-starting the engine, but occasionally needed priming.
That`s when this latest fiasco began.

Latest update!
The injector pump was removed from the engine and sent away to be serviced. It was found to have some leaking internal seals. Great, it has now been re-fitted to the engine and timed...sounds good on tick-over with no vibration.

They took the van for a test-run. It died---, same as before. The mechanic said it seemed lacking in power.

The latest idea is, to remove the exhaust and check for blockage.

Any comments?

Cheers,
Dave.

I really think you need a diesel specialist for this. Ask around or see your local phone book. Our mechanic saw no threat in recommending a specialist for us, and it was money well spent.

yes, get someone to hold their foot on the accelerator and put your hand behind the exhaust you will soon know if its blocked or not

have you tried running it from a fresh can of diesel instead of the tank yet ??

Thanks again...I have relayed your suggestions to the garage. He said he will run a pipe to a jerry-can, via the bulkhead.

Re the exhaust, some clown reversed it into a muddy bank some time ago
