Windshield MK1

Postby philippetransit » Tue Oct 11, 2011 1:30 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm getting worried about a leak underneath the windshield rubber of my Mk1, as far as I can tell it only leaks when driving through rain, so it's not leaking when parked.
There's water on top of the dashboard and it leaks through under my glove box (right hand side). Checking it out I found some rust and small holes underneath the dashboard where the windshield meets the dash. I'm not sure what to do since the rubber seal seems to be in an ok state, I noticed there are some marks where supposedly they (previous owner/garage) pryed some tool in to remove the windshield (not sure it has been replaced at some point but looks like it has been). I really want to avoid corrosion damage since overall there's hardly any rust or corrosion damage. I did have a problem with water coming through the windshield rubber onto the dash whilst being parked, I filled it up with silicone and since then no water leaks anymore but driving through the rain the water comes through. Should I get somebody to kit the whole windscreen or should I have it removed and fit a new rubber. I'm afraid they're going to break the windshield...

Please advice!

Thank you all in advance for replying!!!

rubber breaks down with age lets water in starts to rot the screen surround,, its a common repair you may find a nasty rotten surround when you remove the screen and rubber, in the uk new screens and rubbers are available

Yes, as Neil says, you will have to bite the bullet and remove the screen. Be prepared for varying amounts of rust in the surround :( The screen comes out easy enough and if you are unlucky enough to break it I have some screens and rubbers

the toughned glass screens come out easy but the laminated ones always seem to break :x :)

Thanks for the comforting advice you guys! I'm guessing this won't be a " only a few hours" project, somehow I just needed that little push to get started!
I'll keep you all posted on the progress!

Cheers,

Philippe

The laminated ones are harder to do in that they crack relatively easily,if the rubbers rotten (and you say yours isn't) you can cut it with a knife to make removing the screen easier.
Comma used to do some stuff called "Seek and Seal" I've used it with success some while back but haven't seen any recently.
For leaks where it just trickles in (rather than being forced in by air pressure or blasted in from the wheels) ordinary boot pilsh rubbed in the holes works. All a bit temporary though, its probably time to take the screen out.

You need silver tape then, its what I used over the roof holes where the lights used to be on my ex Police van; watertight! :D

It is aluminium foil tape, I am not sure what else you would call it? Stick to the outside, and you can also stick it on the inside over the hole for double protection. Hardware stores should have it, just cut out to shape before sticking it on. Better if you can get the stuff that has the paper backing that you peel off, makes cutting it much easier.

Hi,
Is it still possible to find the rubber which goes for the rear window and the side sliding windows on a Ford transit Custom Mk1 1972?
