Van is a late mk4
I been reading a lot about people cutting into a ground wire to the lockup solenoid on side on box and using a switch to reproduce the lockup signal. this will not work on the transit box?
I was just rereading through one of your old posts and you refer to a pressure solenoid. name suggests no wires involved. so transit box is completely vacuum based?
And what rpm do you think your engine is doing at 35mph in overdrive 4th

Tbh m8 I couldn't tell you what the revs would be.
when the shift occurs depends on how I been driving.
I never leave it in D when getting up to speed. I shift all gears manually. to get it to 2nd I have be going at least 15mph. to get to 3rd I have to go at least 29mph and have the accelator just so. if I change before then, it changes to intermediary gears which are abit like the next gear, but just rev but provide no pulling power.
it locks up in third ok and will change to overdrive at about 35/36mph with the right pedal position (otherwise its the intermediary revving gear, specially on hills)
VERY rarely, I can get it into overdrive at 31 and keep it there. this only happens if I been soft pedalling for a while and requires some very fine throttle work.
when going uphill, once I drop below 45, box wants to change down. I can stop this by reducing throttle to keep overdrive locked up but once I hit about 36 I can't stop it.
when it does change, it won't go to third, it goes to the intermediary gear that just keeps the revs up but doesn't pull. this is why I shift to 3rd. same situation applies to 2nd and 1st with these intermediary gears so I change manually.
recentl when i am soft pedalling around town, I drive as if i have a clutch and when i shift, i take foot off accelator. this produces a good change at low speed for 1st-2nd-3rd with no intermediary gear.
I am guessing these intermediary gears is the box slipping?
when changing to reverse and i am impatient, it thinks about the change, but only when I have litterally jammed it in there cuz i am doing a 3point turn in a traffic jam or summit. Also kickdown doesn't work. No other issues.
Oil is still a nice cherry red (my overheating problems are a thing of the past).
